XP Home system would lock up shortly after connecting to Internet. It gets an IP address, connects to the home page, then becomes unresponsive. No error messages, just nothing would work anymore. Upon reboot, everthing was back to normal, until Internet access again. User thought they had a virus and per instructions from their system mfg, formatted their drive and reinstalled windows. Same problem occurs after deleting partition, reformatting drive and clean install of XP.

I brought the system to my shop and it connects perfectly to my dsl router and doesn't lock up at all (been connected for 1/2 hour now). Haven't done anything to it.

Could the problem be with their cable modem? I've never seen this happen before.

Hey worked for the cable company, and yes I have seen that a lot, usualy any brand (motorolas, rca, scientific atl, etc) sometimes they do go bad and do weird things, YOU DID A PERFECT TROUBLESHOOTING And could not describe it better, if the system works at your shop guess what? you already know is not the computer.
Also in cable, if there is bad signal coming from the main feed, or the customer had the great idea of using splitter where they should not, that could cause it as well but so far is the modem to me.
Try another modem and you can certainly verify if its the modem or the line (cable, dsl)
Hope it helps

Cable company came out and "reset" the modem and now all is well. We think they may have been shut down by the ISP due to viral activity.
