What does "backwards compatible mean?

I'm installing a Call Pilot 100 2.0 on a CICS extended 2.0 w IRAD. I have been told by equipment dealers that the Call pilot works only with CICS 4.1 and above only. But, I just spoke to a tech who told me that it will work because it is "backwards compatible".

Is this correct?

I have seen working on lower version... although Nortel won't support it or guarantee functionality

So, it sounds like it will, in fact, work. But may or may not work correctly-proceed at your own risk?

Thanks for your answer.

I upgraded a mics 1.0 with a startalk b to a mics 6.0 and cp150. After i did the upgrade on the mics i realized the vmail startalk was still functioning and seem to be ok. The plan was always to replace the vmail, but i thought it was odd how the old seem to work without any obvious hickups
