I have a Avaya Definity (R4.0)and Cisco Call Manager in the same Computer room. (Don't ask...LOL) Is there any way i could set up four digit dialing between the two systems? What hardware would I need?

My manager is a Cisco nut and wants to start replacing all of our remote locations with Cisco VOIP. (Does NOT want to put G700's or any other Gateway...no matter what anyone says.) So it would be nice if the people could call each other internally between the two separate systems. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have been working on this off and on for a while. After talking with Cisco for about 3 hours they ran a trace from the Call Manager. They say they are setting up the call and sending a "set-up" message to the Avaya 8700 but it is not responding to the request so it times out.

Any thoughts?

which extension number are you calling (cisco to Avaya)
is this extension a valid extension on the avaya

if you run the trace on the TAC when calling from the cisco to the avaya do you not see any info at all? I would have thought it should at least seize a channel whether the call successed or not this sounds odd

Can you post the trunk group config?

Also make a call from the avaya to the cisco and list trace tac on it just to ensure you are looking at the correct trunk goup

mentallimit I wish you could post both configuration's as I am going to have to put this same thing in place before too long.

Here are the documents I used to configure this these trunks.

I had to play with it a little because Call Manager is picky about changing the route lists and such. I kept having to reset the route list/group/everything else everytime I made a change.

The setup was straight forward but I was having problems because I didnt reset everything when I made changes.

Sure. I apologize I should have done that before. I cut off the report after the first couple lines because there's nothing listed below that.

TY!!

Wasn't sure if I should use call sig sharing, hairpinning and direct connection since it's not Avaya to Avaya but looks like I should. Actually that looks the same as the current H323 IP trunks I have setup.

I'm able to get calls both directions no problem. Sound quality is fine, reliability is fine. Obviously I can't use it for MWI so that kinda sucks but otherwise it's been fun.

I'm fortunate to be in a position where my boss want's me spending 70% of my time being inovative. So I get to tinker with stuff like SIP and H323 alot.

Yesterday I finaly got the license file for my SES and today I will have a Cisco 7961 running on the Avaya.

Nice thanks again. I'm going to try connecting H.323 to a Cisco BTS Soft Switch and hopefully get it to work. I'm playing with SES as well and just recieved my CD so I'll be loadin it this weekend. I'd like to connect this to the BTS Soft Switch as well but H.323 hopefully is easier and quicker with less moving parts.

If your willing to share some more please let me know any issues with loading SES...

Thanks you very much!

I view a few videos Avaya has up on the SES pages.

Excelent info and a simple walkthrough on installing the software, configuring the server, building the SIP trunks, and registering stations.

So far the only haveng up I have is we didn't recieve our licenses for the SIP Softphones so I cant register them yet.

I have a Cisco 7961 loaded with SIP firmware and registered to the SES. I can't get a call to it or from it yet but I think thats a license issue.

I'll post the fix when I find it.

You bet ...

Episoded 2-5 are on that page. Episode 1 is under the user guides section link on the left.

I think I found out why my phone isnt working. The registration must have been some kind of bug or phantom reporting. After rebooting it to update dial plan configs it wont reregister now.

In those SES sections theres a link to a bonus episode that details registering Cisco 7960/7940 phones to SES. In the Document provided they offer a few troubleshooting commands.

I afound one of those commands very usefull.

tethereal -i eth0 -R ip.addr==xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
My Cisco SIP Phone is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, my SES is yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy.

The results:
admin@TCOMA_CS85SIP1> tethereal -i eth0 -R ip.addr==yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy

I have been searching the Net and found this...

Some of the documents mention that the Avaya 8700 needs a certain feature turned on. SA8507..."H245 Support With Other Vendors?"

Mine is set to "N". Where some of the doc's say it needs to be set to "Y"

For those that have this working correctly could you check your "disp sys spec" and see if this feature is turned on?

Here is mine:

As you can see :

(SA8507) - H245 Support With Other Vendors? n

I hope that helps.

Thanks! Although I was secretly hoping this to be the issue.

MentalLimit this feature:
"H245 Support With Other Vendors? n " So will I be able to set up Ip trunking without this feature activated?

Absolutely must be turned on if you want to be able to pass bi-directional DTMF across cisco/ Avaya h.323 trunks/ gateways.

It's a "green feature" and it's free! Any Avaya Direct or BP should be able to hook you up.
