Software used to start automatically when the CD was inserted but doesn' do it anymore.
I have checked in the system/device manager and "Auto Insert Notification is selected".
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Try checking here:

Open Windows Explorer
Go to View
Go to Folder Options
Go to File Types tab
Scroll to CD Audio Track
Make sure Actions box reads Play
If it does not, click Edit, type in Play in the action box and browse to C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.exe for the application used to perform action
Ok, Close, Close

And....if that doesn't do it for you, or if Play is already in the actions box, try one of these options from Dux Computer Digest (
To activate Autoplay for all CDs for all versions of Windows 9X and Me, click Start, Programs, Setting control Panel, System, Device Manager, expand CDROM by clicking the +, select the desired CD-ROM drive, Properties, Setting tab, check the Auto insert notification checkbox, and click OK.

If this doesn't work, check the Windows registry... Modify it as your own risk. Start, Run, enter regedit. It is advisable to back-up the registry before proceeding. To do that,

On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
Browse to the location where you want to store the exported file.
In the File name box, type a name for the new file.
Then, expand the registry tree to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsCurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Modify the value for the NoDriveTypeAutoRun key to 0000 95 00 00 00 (or 0x95 in Regedt32.exe).

Exit regedit and restart Windows.

Thanks carr for your help.
I edited the registry key (after doing a back-up) and everything is back to normal.

i have similar problem but cannot identify the registry string. can you give me an "idiots guide" to locating the correct string and modifying in. regards barry

Here's how I get to it (in Win98):

Start
Run
type in regedit, OK
double-click HKEY_CURRENT_USER
double-click Software
double-click Microsoft
double-click Windows
double-click Current Version
double-click Policies
double-click Explorer
double-click NoDriveTypeAutoRun

Edit the data string, click OK

carrr, thanks for help but my registry already is entered as you advised

CARRR

re your second link's info
my registry entry is set to "95" BUT my disks are as follows:- b= floppy ,c = hard disk, d=cdrw , e=dvd. does this mean that the "95" needs changing ? OR does it mean that drive e(dvd) has to be changed to d ? by rewiring or whatever. you advice/comments would be much appreciated....barry

I'm digging a little deeper on the issue, but for now, try changing 95 to 91. You'll need to restart. (Also, when you have a disk in your drive and right click on the drive in Explorer or My Computer, does Autoplay show up on teh context menu as an option?)

BLEW2,

Think I might have stumbled onto something...really remedial, but ... who knows.

Try this if all else has failed:

From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click the System icon, then click the Device Manager tab.
On the Device Manager tab, double-click the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM category (you may have to select View devices by type to even see the CD-ROM category).
Select the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive that appears below then click Properties.
On the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM properties dialog box, click the Settings tab and then click to clear the Auto Insert Notification check box. Click OK. Close all open windows
From the Start menu, click Shut Down. At the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Restart the computer and click Yes.

And now you've got to go back through and reenable...

The computer restarts and enters Windows. From the Start menu, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click the System icon, then click the Device Manager tab.
On the Device Manager tab, double-click the CD-ROM category.
Select the CD-ROM drive that appears below, then click Properties.
On the CD-ROM properties dialog box, click the Settings tab and then select the Auto Insert Notification check box, then click OK. Close all open windows
From the Start menu, click Shut Down. At the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Restart the computer and then click Yes.

suspect that my dvd is duff.it "reads" ok if you start it manually but it wont release the disc again.the slider pops out by itself sometimes when its idle and it wont autorun.Windows says that it has the latest driver.the disc can be extracted during the pc power-up sequence
my cdrw autoruns and extracts normally.

carrr
re you "audio track" tip. my actions box has "open" and "play". is this good ?

try getting rid of the "open" command

pc manufacturer is sending me a "rescue" disk which they say will solve problems.i think that i'll hang fire until then.thanks for all of your efforts...barry
