Hi all,

I've got a real problem on my hands with my acer laptop. Every time I boot it up, it comes to the screen where it says that Windows encountered a problem. It then asks me to chose whether to boot windows normally, or in safe mode etc. I have chosen all of the options and the outcome is always the same. The windows boot screen appears normally and then a BSOD flashes up very quickly, (I am unable to read what it says) the laptop then restarts and continues in this cycle.

I have tried inserting an XP pro disc on which I have tried to access the recovery console. It reaches a certain point and then restarts automatically with no warning whatsoever. I have tried various other recovery discs that all work for a few minutes at best but then the laptop just shuts itself down.

I have tried using an ubuntu livecd which works fine, but I really need XP and some of the documents on it.

If anybody could help I would be really grateful.

Thanks,
Rick.

Can you use the Safe Mode screen options and select "Turn off automatic restarts", you must be running SP2 to see this boot option. If you don't have this option do you have a Digital Camera to photograph the Stop Error?

Your hard drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software to thoroughly check the condition of your hard drive.

These are RAM testers.
