Is there any freeware software to shut a Windows XP SP2 PC down automatically at a given time or is there something within XP that would do the same ?

yes.....

Windows Scheduler built into windows | Start > Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks.

create a new task that launches "C:\Windows\Systm32\shutdown.exe -s"

Hope this Helps.

I use this on our Win2K servers, you just type your command and then put the time you want the machine to shut down at the end!

I have tried scheduled tasks and have found that they don't always work for some reason - try that first though, will be the easier method.
