I have noticed for some time now that the FLASH-2 & -4 have this odd audio distortion on the recording announcements. All the FLASH VMs are connected to CICS 7.1 and older KSUs. Is this just bad design on NT's part, or is there a fix for the bad audio on the FLASH VM? The audio quality of the FLASH does not even come close to the STARTALK & MINI of years past.

sounds like the processor is going south. Not really worth the time and expence of repair. Replace with a refirb or upgrade to CP-?

Well, your responses are very interesting, thanks for your input. The first CICS / FLASH2, I actually serviced was back in 2007/2008. That CICS from my notes looks like it had REL 01J CICS DR1.0(DR) NT7B58AA-93, and the FLASH2 was an NT5B06DC-93 2-port REL 06B, PC card: NT5B78DM ENG SW1.7. The FLASH2 died at one point, and it was sent to J&J for repairs. J&J replaced the PC card with type NT5B78DC ENG SW3.0 (2.0.1). Both units had the strange audio distortion, which sounded to me like bad digital audio. So, fast forward to 2011. I was asked to install a system that was a CICS with 4.1 version 30NFG00 NAT on the KSU and FLASH2 NT5B07 (2.1) with PC card NT5B78EC REL 02 VM 2.0. I did default the CICS @ the 4.1 level and tested it and the FLASH2 to make sure it worked before the install. It had the same audio distortion as the system from 2007/2008. Because the client wanted CID and T7316E sets, it needed to be updated to 7.1 version 30HDC12 NAT. So I did that, and I defaulted the FLASH2 also. But the audio distortion was still there when everything was set up, programmed, and recorded. So I was just thinking about this condition and wanted to find out what the cause may be. The client has never mentioned the audio distortion, maybe they don't hear it. I don't know? But it is obvious to me when I call there and hear to auto attendant menu. I initially tried to speak at different levels when recording the greetings, etc., but that had no effect.

Any more clues?

If you are expecting pure hifi sound from a digital system, you'll never hear it. A-D and D-A converters in the digital systems are only designed for sample rates for POTs line quality. Probable 8k or less sampling rate At that rate. Each time the audio is converted it will introduce distortion.

Your right, Marv, but the distortion I am hearing does not exist on a STARTALK A,B, or C or the MINI, nor have I heard the same type on any of the newer boxes, like the Call Pilot or BCM. So the FLASH is really cheap in the A-D, D-A department. If that is the conclusion, then my guess was right! Even the PARTNER PVMPC card has superior audio when compared to the FLASH for inexpensive VM. SO NT dropped the ball on this one...
