Hi,
The problem I'm having is with an ASUS P3C-E, in which if I install a Pentium 3 500mhz processor, or a 400 and above celeron processor it will freeze when it starts up. Sometimes it freezes in the BIOS, sometimes it'll load the OS and then freeze. However, if I install a Pentium 2 processor or a low end celeron (333mhz and below), it works fine. I have the jumpers set to handle a CPU frequency 100, and I've tried jumperless mode but to no avail. I'm thinking it's a dead motherboard, but I don't want to give up that quick. Any suggestions?

Yeah, right now I have it set on 100mhz bus with the jumpers on the board: 1,2,3-on, 4,5-off. I have tried it with the jumperfree mode as well, the processor is supported for the board. It's a p3 500/512/100/2v....

Just to be clear, there should be seperate jumpers for the bus speed (100mhz or 133mhz) and the cpu multiplier (1 to 8x)
Therefore set to 5x for the p3500mhz cpu. Resetting the cmos might help also. It is possible that there is a problem with that cpu...

Unfortunately, there isn't seperate jumpers for the bus speed and multiplier, just 5 dip switches. I've tried reseting the cmos, and tried different P3 processors all at the same speed.

When using jumperfree mode, did yo set the multiplier for the cpu in the bios? According to the manual, if the cpu is not locked then this needs to be set in bios for it to work.
If you can't get to the bios with that cpu then start in safe mode ( cover pins 2 and 3 on jumper 10 ) then start and set the multiplier in the bios.
Also I notice that there are various models of the p3500mhz, and some run a 100mhz bus speed and some run a 133mhz bus speed. What is the exact model you have?

It's a p3 500 100fsb, the problem is even in safe I have maybe 10 seconds (give or take), to access the BIOS before it freezes up, even in safe mode. So I can't change and save anything.

Is there a BIOS upgrade needed? When I first bought my Soyo board, the manual said it would take a PIII, but I had to do a BIOS upgrade before it would accept a PIII. PII ran OK before and after.

No, I was able to install the latest BIOS update, but only with a P2 processor, so there wouldn't be a problem with it freezing during the update. But still the same problem lingers, even with the update.
