Hello -
I am presently running ArcServe 2000, version 7.0, build 1100. I am using a media type as HP SureStor DLT40. This is all connected to a Windows 2000 Advanced Server. I am using Agent-level backups on 2000 Server & Exchange 2000.
I am abale to backup my mailboxes without an issue.

However, when I try to backup my file server, I get the following messages (and lots of them):

* AE0016 Unexpected return from FindFirstFile API. Unable to backup files after (FILE=D:\Home\jcox alias, EC=2,The system cannot find the file specified. )

* AW0004 Failed to open file <D:\Home\ICON?>. RC=123, The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

* AW0004 Failed to open file <D:\Home\lbrown\Zip Files\ALL PHONE LISTINGS\ZSC - UPDATED 02?19?01>. RC=123, The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

The application runs and runs, but never backs up anything. I end up cancelling the job and get a job cancelled message (duh).

What am I doing wrong here? I have both PCs and Macintoshes on my network, if that's any help. I don't know if it's an issue of ArcServe being a pain-in-the-butt software or if this all has to do with Macintosh files. I never seemed to have problems until recently.

Do I need some agent to read legal Mac files (i.e., special characters that Macs allow in the filename)?

Please advise as I am no longer sure I have a valid backup.

The return code 2, 123 are returned from the O/S.

The question becomes how are you backing up the MAC files. If you are trying to go through the network and grab the MAC machine, I do not believe there is support for this.

You would need to set up a MAC volume on the Window server and back up the entire volume. Due to the data and resource forks of the MAC files, you would need to restore the entire volume also.

Need to determine how you are trying to get the files here.

Fritz4000 -
The Macintosh files are presently stored on a Windows volume that has Services for Macitosh presently enabled. Users on Mac connected to this file as a shared volume. These files are stored in the Home directory. Some users that have both PCs and Macs store their files in this directory. Sometimes, the use the same file on either platform.
Whe you say OS, do you mean that Windows 2000 Server is returning the error, or is ArcServe having an issue with something in Wondows 2000? Is there any detail available as to what these error codes mean? I have already gone to the CA website, but that place left me with a most unpleasant and frustrating experience.
Please advise, as I am at wits end. I have restarted my engines and hope this will help.
I will know in the morning when this batch fails yet again....
Thank you.

The meaning of the errors are present in the error code in the activity log. ARCserve is trying to open the files as any other application would and getting the return codes. For example, if you go to a command prompt and type "net helpmsg 123" after hitting enter, you will get a return from Windows that matches your error code:

The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

Try turning off the file estimate in the backup options tab. This will try to make a list of files it is expecting to backup and if one is not found may cause an error. At this point I cannot be positive if it is a problem with windows or ARCserve, although I have not heard of this problem before with ARCserve.

Fritz4000 -
Where do I find this file estimate option? I looked in the Backup menu for the job, but did not find an indication. Is there another place where this might be found?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

While in the backup screen, choose the backup drop down menu and choose options. Look in the operations tab.

Dear Fritz4000 -
I found it, thanx: It was already selected as you suggested. The backup failed last night (as expected). On further inspection, I noticed that the error relates to invalid names, as Windows Naming rules go. File Services for Macintosh are up and running, so I am not sure what the problem may be.
BTW - The backup failed for an entirely different cause: W3831 - Unable to find any media / W3832 - Unable to find a blank media. This happened even though the operation has been instructed to overwrite the mounted media, and that there was an available medium indeed mounted in the drive.
Does this mean I have to format the tape (even though it should do so before the backup runs)?
Any direction you can give me on this is GREATLY appreciated.
Regards,

Turns out I had a dirty drive. I ran the cleaning routine, thereby making the media unusable. We cleaned the drive (a couple of times, really) and have not yet had a repeat of this issue.
Thanks for all your help in this, anyway. I learned a lot! Christopher *
