Anyone having issues with the SW installer tool for 3300?

Twice recently, when I've been trying to upgrade a system from 9.0 to 4.0 to 4.2 I've had an issue where the SWI tool errors out and tells me that the license password is invalid during phase 2 (4.0 to 4.2).

The license password in both cases was downloaded from the AMC by the SWI tool.

Last night was particularily frustrating as I forgot to get a new manual backup after migrating the DB. I had to roll back to 4.0 and call it a night.

Anyone else have this issue?

Upgraded 2 Mitel systems this week from 7.1 to 4.0 then to 4.2 with the latest software installer without a hitch.

At one time I thought that becuase of the change to the Enterprise/Stand alone licenseing module in 4.1 and 4.2 you had to have the licenses "converted" in the AMC. Not sure if that is still the case.

MitelAU did you have to do anything special with the AMC for your upgrades other then selecting the correct load in the pull down menu of the AMC?

Nothing special is required. If you have IP networking you become enterprise and if you don't then you become standalone.

As an aside I think Mitel needs to start introducing patches rather full installs or upgrades. To upgrade from pre 4.0 to 4.2 can take anywhere from 4-5 hours (best case scenario) including testing. If an upgrade fails which can happen occasionally then you could be doing the graveyard shift.
I understand that in this case a database conversion is required however approximately 12 minute reboot times for CX/CXi is arhcaic which is the primary reason why upgrades take so long .

Read the release notes. Before upgrading to 4.2 you should change the 4,0 or 4.1 DB to SDS then upgrade to 4.2. It goes a lot faster and allows you to fix DB errors before the upgrade. It takes much less time.

NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED!
 
NYtalkin - The software will not allow you to even attempt to upgrade the 4.2 without first migrating the DB.

I followed all of the correct steps.

The password was provided by the AMC.

When the system went to restore the License and options it failed and told me my password was invalid. (on 2 separate occasions/systems)

Naturally, I had neglected to get a backup of release 4 post migration so I had no choice but to roll back. (I had one of rel 4 pre-migration)

Mytalkin,

I think you need to re- read the release notes. 2 upgrades including tiding up programming and converting database and final testing on a CXi will take 4 hrs at best.

kwbMitel, I think I have experienced this once or twice also (with the software installer), and once the Mitel got locked into a continual reboot cycle (until I used serial cable to change the boot commands)
 
Licensing issue, what I would do to prove that it is indeed the software installer is to convert the database at 4.0, backup and do a full install to 4.2. Then licenses the box via the internet and restore database backup.
Fissure, I don't think your issue is related to kwbmitel.

MitelAU - Well there is no doubt that the SWI tool caused this issue. I am just wondering if it is inherant or an anomaly.

Yes I greatly regret forgetting to do another backup post migration as I would definitely have prefered to do a full install as you recommend as opposed to rolling back to 4.0

Based on the responses it appears that this was an anomaly and I should not expect it to happen again. (I hope)

kwbMitel, just wondering, did you log into the AMC and change the software version from 4.0 to 4.2 for th app record before you did the 2nd upgrade. I know you dont have to as SWI tool should sort this out for you but just a thought....
 
No bobcheese, I did not. I never have. I always allow the software to negotiate for me.

I thought you needed to do the change in the AMC to get the new password generated and then let the software install handle its retreival. Never done an upgrade without doing that first.

Software installer will sync with AMC and update details. No need to change details in AMC before upgrade.

Before converting to SDS run the MIGRATION PRECHECK Maintenance command. Then fix the errors it finds.

I too have expeienced this on more than one occasion.
I found it was to do with using a dialup connection to the AMC and closing the connection too early, there by the licences were not downloaded correctly.
I have not looked too deeply into why it failed, I just run the SWI tool again and all was OK.
One thing to note the SWI keeps a record of every APP record in C:\Program Files\mitel\Mitel 3300 ICP Software Installer\AMC\APP RECORD\sync
You could check the sync.log to see if there are any errors

I was speaking to one of our techs earlier and he has had the same issue today. Trouble was he inputted the license file manualy into the SW tool not sync via AMC. at the end of the upgrade it errored saying the license was invalid. Trouble was after that when he rebooted he got nothing out of the maintenance port and the system would not boot. I will speak to him tomorrow to find out more detail
 
bobcheese - I did not manually do anything. I always let the SWI do everything.

The problem would be obvious otherwise (PEBKAC)
