We have a person at our facility that is "hearing challenged". The person has a CapTel phone at home which translates voice to text on the phone's display but, CapTel says it will not work through the PBX. Other than the volume control on the phone itself, is there an amplified handset for the Nortel 3900 series phones?

Or, is there any type of aftermaket, handset, phone etc that could be used.

It should work on a PBX if you use an Analog port to the phone instead of the Digital Port fot a 3900.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

WALKER HAS AN AMPLIFIER THAT CONNECTS TO YOUR HANDSET (MODEL W-10)IT BOOSTS THE VOLUME VERY WELL. IN ADDITION IT IS AC POWERED

Sorry for the delay. Ace, are you thinking the CapTel phone will work off the PBX? It sounded like it to me but CapTel said no.
CityPBX, we'll probably try the Walker for now.

Thanx

This CapTel phone is just an analog line like the one at home. Its will work on the Nortel PBX, look like all the text msg is all done inside the CapTel's phone.

I just went to the URL you provided and this is what I got.

Telephone Line Requirements:
CapTel requires connection to a standard analog telephone line (or analog port), such as is commonly found in households. You cannot connect CapTel to a digital telephone line (as is sometimes found in offices) or to any other non-analog telephone line. Users in an office environment should check with their telephone administrator to make sure an analog port is available. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) users can connect a CapTel phone if the appropriate inline analog filter is installed between the phone jack and the CapTel. Inline filters are commonly available from the DSL provider.

Now the user would have to call the CapTel service every time they wanted to make a callto get the translater service. It won't work for incoming calls.

Thanx for the input. Inbound calls is really where it is needed. From my understanding, if Jane Doe wants to call John Doe, who has the CapTel phone, Jane, from her home, calls an 800-# which connects her to a voice to text server. Somehow the server calls John Doe and he sees the text on the CapTel phone from what Jane is saying.

May have to have CapTel do a demo and actually see if it will work behind a PBX.

are the people that are going to call this hard of hearing person know they are hard of hearing?

Yes, the caller would know to call the 800-# because they know that the person they are calling has the CapTel phone and is hard of hearing.

Then it should work the same as it would at home, they call the 800#, they would call the CapTel phone and it should work. an Analog phone line at work is the same as an analog at home, it's just going though the PBX.

I think the best thing to do will be to have them come in and demo it off the PBX. Wooks or doesn't work, end od story.

Will keep you posted.

I looked at the Captel website. You need to find out whether its a one-line or two-line model, etc. Definately bring it in.

One of things you can do is leave the 3900 set there for caller ID but then install an analog port with the same DN for the Captel phone.

Got the CapTel phone for a demo and thought I would report the findings.

Hooked the CapTel phone up to a pots line and called the 800# from another phone. After 800# answers I entered the number of the pots attached to the CapTel. CapTel phone rang and I answered it. Everything I said to the called 800# was transcribed and sent to the CapTel phone text display. I said "Hello, this is a test" and that is exactly what came across the CapTel display. Pretty slick!

Hooked it up to an analog port off the Opt81C and made the same call as above. Success, same results, worked like a champ.
