While I was driving back through Buffalo, NY over my Christmas break, I saw a sign on the Thruway that read "Welcome to Buffalo, an All America City"...shouldn't that read "...an All American City"??? I doubt that this is a mistake, but what is the difference between an All American City and an All America City, if any?

Oh yeah...and Happy New Year to all you MAI TT'ers.

Perhaps it should be:

"Welcome to Buffalo, an 'All-America City'

Or just "City of Buffalo." I'm not moving somewhere because a road sign claims they're an "All-America City", especially since that just makes me think their educational facilities are somewhat lacking.

In the UK, they have "All England Championships", England, probably being used in a similar context to America in "All America City". Not being a sports watcher, I've got no idea what an "All England ..." is.

As far as i know it's just a name that is used for particular championships or companies.

The sign's about halfway between our house and cottage. It's amazing that it's held up this well for this long.

Not sure about the designation's staying power (or accuracy). The area's lost a good percentage of its population since that award, half the churches in the Diocese of Buffalo are closing, constant warfare on the east and west sides of the city proper, highest tax rates in the nation, etc. etc. etc. I wonder if they rescind these awards?

It's a good job Buffalo made the grade otherwise that sign would have read

"Welcome to Buffalo, a partially American city

And these Welcome signs also apply:
Welcome to Miami...a mostly Cuban city.
Bienvenido a L.A...Una Ciudad Méxicana.

philhege...you're still living in the Buffalo area? I spent about 8 years there, but left for greener pastures about 3 years ago. There are a few things I miss about that area (friends, Bills & Sabres, Wegmans, Niagara Falls), but moving out of that area was the best move I've ever made. I now live in the Indy area.

rjoubert,

I've been here since '99. It's the usual repatriation story: to be close to family. I've had good luck with employment and quality-of-life here. Sure, the tax burden SUXX0rs, but we came in here with our eyes open, so no biatching.

There's always someplace worse off. I'm doing my best to bloom where I've been planted, enjoy what options there are to enjoy, and minimize the negatives.

There are no "America" towns in Texas. It's a sovereign state with the ability to cede at will.
Here on the left coast, it depends on the signage of any locale. We have {insert ethnicity} "towns" that reflect the majority of it's denizens. I believe we have every nationality represented in the contiguous states.
