Hello all,
I currently have a 2003 domain. We purchased a new server, and installed 2008 Enterprise 64bit. On the 2003 server I ran adprep.exe /forestprep, no issues with that, and /domainprep, also no issues. But when I run dcpromo on the 2008 server I get a message saying I need to run /forestprep on the 2003 server before I can add the 2008 as a DC. Like I said I had no issues up to this point. I've installed 2008 at sites. But this is the first time I've added a 2008 server to a 2003 domain. I was wondering if it is a compatibly issue with 32bit server 2003 and 64bit server 2008? I've googled this. The only answers I've found were for people who did not run adprep.exe /forestprep and /domainprep.

I did wait for replication. I tried it a few days later with same results. I did manage to find my mistake. I back tracked the steps I did, and thought maybe I didn't use the correct version to run adprep. I couldn't remember if i had downloaded 2008 or 2008 R2. This made the difference. The disk I used to install Ent Server R2 did not have adprep in the sources directory. So I started from the beginning, but this time making sure i downloaded the 2008 R2 edition. It was 64 bit, but did have the adprep32.exe file. I ran adprep32 /forestprep and /domainprep. Ran dcpromo on the 2008 server, and it worked! So using the R2 disk is what made the difference.
