I am running a Merlin Legend R7.x and I would like to add another DLC Operator position. I already have 3 DLC's and would like to add a 4th one that is identical to the others.

I have plugged the 20L phone into one of the "hot" ports on an 016 card in the phone system, and hooked the DSS up to the phone. The phone works as a standard extension right now.

Here's where I'm stuck.

I know that I need to somehow "activate" this phone so that it can be an "operator" phone before I can copy an existing operator's extension onto it. But I don't know how.

I went into the system programming, and when I got into the "operators" section, my entire phone system locked up (I understand what that means), so I decided to wait until after-hours to complete this process in case this "activation" needs exclusive acess to the phone system to preform this operator addition.

However, I was simply fiddling around looking for the place to activate this operator, so I'm not even sure if that was the place to be anyway.

So now I'm asking if anyone knows how to do this so that I don't have to fiddle around for too long this evening after-hours.

You can download the manuals and documentation from the AVAYA website. They are all available there. The System Planning and Features volumes will cover DLCs, etc.

Happy reading!

You cannot use an MLX-20L on an 016 T/R module - that module is for single-line phones only. It has to be plugged into an MLX module. There is a limit on the total number of DLC operator positions. I believe it is 8. To add a DLC position, you went to the correct programming screen. You would need to just enter the MLX extension number of the operator phone you want to add - and yes, it will cause your system to go down while the new position is added - so you should wait to do this step until after hours. Then, use the inspect button to make sure all 4 of your operator positions are listed.

Oh, yeah, my bad, it's not in an 016 card, it's a 408 GS/LS-MLX card. Sorry, I guess I misspoke. I know it's in the right card and port, it was just the programming I am concerned with.

Thanks for the replies though guys. I will check out the Avaya website, but thanks for confirming that I was at the right screen tdaugirdas.

After I get done in the "Operator" screen, do I need to somehow also add that extension into some sort of calling group that the operator phones might be in? Or is it all taken care of in the "Operator" window?

Also, will I have to do something special to liven up the DSS console on this new phone? Or will it automatically be livened up when I copy the extension from another operator phone?

To add the additional DLC: Go into systems programming, start, operator, positions, direct line, extension# of added DLC, enter, store all. The system will go through a restart - so do not do this until after hours. You can verisy by going back into system programming, and you will see the operator position(s) listed on the screen. If they are all there correctly, exit out. The DSS should work. The default programming for the operator phone might be OK - depending on what setup you have (key vs. hybrid PBX) and what extra buttons have been programmed on the other phones. I'd check before you just copy stuff.

Tom's is the short version of how to do it.

I would suggest downloading and reading the aforementioned documents, because it covers all of the specifics, maximums and 'walks' you through the steps with the forms that you can print out. This way you can cover all the bases.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the help guys! Of course, I haven't downloaded the manuals or documentation yet, but I successfully added the operator position after-hours on Friday night.

I was a little scared about pressing "Store All", but after the restart, the extension was working as a DLC as I had hoped.

However, I did have to do a "Line Copy" to get all of my copper lines added to it (we have a few copper lines in addition to our T1 lines), and then finally I had to manually copy each SA button, Coverage Button, Pickup Button, Loudspeaker Page, etc, since the extension copy didn't do anything I don't think.

But once that was done, everything was working except one thing. The DSS console is still not working. No lights. So I am going to go try injecting some power direct to the phone instead of relying on the 4 pairs to supply it (I do have all 4 pairs connected).

I'll let y'all know how it turns out.

Ok, this is weird, but after I fiddled with the in-line power adapter a bit, I tried hooking up the DSS without the in-line power, and it worked. I verified this by unplugging and plugging it a few times, and it came up every time.

I thought I had tried that before with no luck.

Anyway, everything is working great now!

Thanks guys! Now it's time to download that documentation... :)
