Hi,

I am running Internet Explorer 5.5 on an NT workstation. How do I activate the Active Desktop. Thanks in advance.

The only way I have found to do it is to un-install to get you down below IE4. Run IE4 setup (SP1 I believe) and enable Active desktop from there. Then upgrade to 5.5.

I don't believe there is a way to "enable" Active Destop from later versions, as Microsoft built it in to later OS's.

Good Luck! [sig]<a href=mailto: anongod@hotmail.com> anongod@hotmail.com</a><br><a href= > </a><br>"Drawing on my fine command of language, I said nothing."[/sig]

To enable desktop, if you have i think, version 4 or higher of IE. Go to the control panel->display->web->click on the tab that says &quot;view my active desktop as a web page&quot; and hit apply.

later B-)

To install active desktop run ie5 with the following switch

this is case sensitive

IE5SETUP.EXE /C:&quot;ie5wzd /e:IE4Shell_NTx86&quot;

Post back if this works

It works... I tried it, just make sure and install IE 5.5 at the same time. (just the browser)

It works. Sort of.
Actually, I have to say it works, but now the Start button no longer works: the start menu no longer opens. But I have the toolbars allright, including the quicklaunch that is the main reason for wanting active desktop in the first place.

Any idea how to get the start button back ? (NT4SP6).

To fix the problem with the start button NOT working after doing this install of the active desktop:

1. Open Control Panels
2. Select Add/Remove Programs
3. Highlight Internet Explorer
4. Select Add/Remove button on right of box
5. Then select Repair Internet Explorer

This will clean up the problems caused by the install, for some reason it does not do a complete install, just halfway.

There is an easier way. Find a copy of the file IE4SHL95.CAB or IE4SHLNT.CAB depending on your os (I found a copy on my Office2k CD), extract the cab file somewhere (use MS cabview, winzip or Win2k (maybe others)). Right click on the ie4shell.inf file, then select install.

After you finish reinstalling IE 5.5 (or whatever version you are using) to get your start menu back, and all the other stuff working right (when you reinstall, it will ask you something about all components being installed, reinstall or exit, select reinstall) everything should work spiffy.

Download this file:

and follow these directions to the letter.

How to install the Windows Desktop Update without having to install IE4.

1. Unzip the contents of Desktop Update.ZIP to a temporary folder.

2. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to your temporary folder.

3. Right click on IE4SHELL.INF

4. Choose install in context menu.

5. You will receive an error. Choose Skip.

6. Reboot your computer. Be advised, your start button will not work.

7. Double click on your My Computer icon and select Control Panel.

8. Double click on Add\Remove Programs.

9. Choose IE 5.0, click on add/remove.

10. Now choose Repair and OK.

11. Reboot your computer.

12. Now go to Start>Run and type the following:

regsvr32.exe webvw.dll

The show desktop and channel icons may be missing from your Quick
Launch bar. If this is the case, follow these directions to create
them.

1. Copy the both the channels.scf file and the desktop.scf file to your
Windows/System folder.

2. Rename the channels.scf file to &quot;View Channels.scf&quot; and rename desktop.scf
to &quot;Show Desktop.scf&quot;

3. Right click and create a shortcut to each scf file and place them
in the Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
folder.

4. Reboot.

Can anyone tell me what program the .scf extension should be associated with?
Mine was trashed by SimTown.
thanks

this should be the easiest way to do it. If not, there is the long route. open Notepad and copy and paste the following between the lines and save the file as scg.reg. Double-click on the file to merge the contents into the registry.

================BEGIN CUT==================
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.scf]
@=&quot;SHCmdFile&quot;

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SHCmdFile]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SHCmdFile\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SHCmdFile\shell\open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SHCmdFile\shell\open\command]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SHCmdFile\shell\open\ddeexec]

then shutdown and restart.
