Access 97 Reserved Error [-1601]

I have a table with an indexed text field with size set to 10. However, a handful of my 16,000 records have far more (I'm guessing 255) characters smashed into that one field. The characters in the field are the same as those in other fields for that particular record. When I try to edit the Indexed field, I get a Reserved Error[-1601]. Can someone please tell me what causes this problem and how I might be able to fix it?
