I have a new e machine with WinXP Home installed on OEM drive.
I want to take the hard drive from an old computer that is running Win98SE on it. There is a lot of data on this older hard drive that would take forever to transfer onto CD ROM. I have tried installing the older hard drive in the new machine but when I try to access it , I get an erro message saying that the hard drive is not formatted and asks if I would like to format it. I know if I format the HD , all of the info will be destroyed. Any suggestions on how I can access this drive without reformatting? Or am I relagated to copying each and every file on the old drive?

Would expect that you could put it on the secondary channel as master and do a BIOS search for it to set the right parameters and it would become visible.
There are some issues that affect the ability to see drives swapped like this, but not many.
And worst case, how about networking them to cross the stuff?

I have it set as the slave. I see it as F: local crive and when I check its properties , it says the the volume is 0 and the type of system is RAW. What does that mean and how would I network them?

Or was it set up with a 3rd party drive overlay?

The original Gateway the the HD came out of did use GoBack.

I actually got the drive to boot but it wouldn't see the CD Rom (no drivers in that 98 OS.)

I reinstalled the drive into the old gateway because it was the easiest way to get the data on to CD but then the machine would not see the CD-r in the original machine. But if I put a CD in , it would recognize it and open it!!!

I AM SO CONFUSED!!!

I amy just leave it as it is for the time being but would like to know , still, how to go about doing this.
I may possibly be able to use Detto to get the info off of the drive??

That's why I asked about Go-Back. Symantec has an answer to your problem, there is a program on the install disk. Support/ Gbtools/ gb_prog.exe, I think is the program you need. This removes the GoBack overlay, and converts from "raw" to normal. It's been a while since I needed to use the program (after the "hassle" of the first time, now I remember to remove Go-Back first!), so contact Symantec for proper use of this program.

Thank You....It will be on my list of things to do this week...again THANKS
