I believe the 9031 phones were permanently assigned to each base. So, yes, if the base died, the phone would be useless. The 9040 phones register to the antenna/base so can be re-used if the base died.

the 3910 is a much better constructed and functioning phone than the 9000 series in my opinion and you can place the base unit anywhere, unlike the 9000 series where it has to hang on the wall and break every 6 months. press feature 59 on a display phone and if it says ACS Rx.xx then the 3910 will work.
