We have recently installed a 3300 (last fall) and I spoke with my vendor about installing UR3. As we are still in our first year the upgrade is covered under software assurance; ghowever, my VAR wants to charge me $512 labor for doing the upgrade.

As I do 95% of the switch programming, I feel pretty confident that I can do the upgrade myself if I can get him to give me the release. We are currently on 8.0

My question is, How hard is this upgrade to do and if it is easy how do I do it?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Using the software installer tool there is very lilttle you need to know but if you are still on warranty you should allow the VAR to do it and protect your warranty.

I tried doing this last night...looks like I need to readjust and try again tonight. But you actually have to setup a FTP server and put the upgrade file on that server. Then you use the installer tool to start the upgrade. Inside the installer it will ask for your ftp location and psswds. I am actually doing an upgrade from 7.1ur2 to ur3. In this case the install is pretty simple. But its going to be a little tricky for you if you are going to ver 8. I believe you will need a new app record ID (licensing)(someone else please confirm). Its that stuff that you will probably need your VAR's interaction for.

I am already at ver 8.0 All I want to do is upgrade to UR3. Is the installer tool easy to get a copy of?

nytalkin,
Your thoughts on the warrenty issue make sense. It's just hard to justify over $500 to install a software upgrade.

I work a VAR and in my opinion the customer can do upgrades all he likes as long as he is versed in the procedures. For my customers that are interested I invite them to observe and take notes while I do an upgrade.

Customers that do their own upgrades should be prepared for something to go wrong (rare) and understand that the VAR will bill his time to fix whatever is wrong.

CAUTION: There are other devices, applications that may be impacted by an upgrade to the 3300. If you have an NSU for example, you will have to upgrade the DB on the NSU prior to the upgrade of the 3300 if you want yuor PRI to work.

Applications that have required upgrades after upgrading a 3300 to rel 8 in my experience:
(in no particular order)
- Enterprise Manager
- Teleworker
- Mobile Extension
- Your Assistant

Depending on your site, the price quoted by your VAR may be well worth it.

KWB is correct. A complete understanding of the contents of the Release Notes is imperative. Upgrades have been known to fail and recovery can sometimes be quite involved as well.

I would let the VAR handle this one. Take notes and ask questions.

Do you have other apps, opsman and/or NSU or ASU connections. These may require upgrading as well.

It does make sense to take notes and ask questions. Thats what I usually do and why I do almost everything myself.

At this time I do not have OPSMAN installed but will be implementing a second ICP this spring to gain resiliency so I will have it soon.

This begs a new question though. Will both ICP's need the same release? I would think so and if that the case I would have to believe a new one will come with UR3 and they would need to update my first controller to match. (Always thinking)

I have no NSU's connected. Just 3 SX-2000 P-nodes.

At this point I will let them do the upgrade.

Thanks to all for your input. This forum has been great.

To your new question of both ICPs being the same release - No, it is not imperative that they are the same, I have had different releases working. But, there is no real reason not to have both on the same release. That being said, DO NOT expect that the other system will be upgraded as part of the install of the new one. My company would either do it as part of a maintenance contract or it would be a billable MAC.

You can't fix stupid...

But you sure can profit from it!

$500 is not an unreasonable figure to do the upgrade. No there's not much to it, but if you've never been trained, I would ask the var if they would mind showing you how to do it. The procedure is in the book, which if you have the original software disk, then "the book" is on the disk. Another document worth asking for is the "Release Notes" for the new version being installed. There's no valid reason for the VAR denying you access to this documentation.

Might want to wait a week or two on upgrading to UR3. I hear they're in the process of spinning a new load to add in some new bug fixes.
