6509 cannot see network

I have a 6509 with dual supervisor modules, a 16 port gbic switch, and 3 ethernet cards. I brought the switch online for test purposes and here is what I found. All ports I have turned on are up with protocols up. I can ping my dns, dhcp, and proxy server. Here's the problem, when I connect a workstation to the switch they do not pull an IP address. I cannot ping any of the servers from the workstation even if I statically IP the machine. I am losing my mind. Thanks,

It is in the correct vlan but I think i found the problem. The vlan is up but the protocol is down. I tried a shut and then no shut to bring it up but the protocol is still down. Any ideas?

What port are you plugging the workstation into on the switch? It would be best to configure any access ports (workstations) as a switchport.

Try configuring the port as a layer 2 switchport with the below commands and see what happens. Also make sure you can route accross vlans if the workstation is in a different vlan from the servers.

I set it up as a switch port. No change. We are on a flat network here so everything is in vlan1. vlan1 is now up and up, but I still cannot access the network.

Are you able to ping the workstation from the switch if you statically assign an IP address, subnet, and GW to the workstation?

The interface shows up and up. I am able to ping every ip on my network from the switch. When I plug a pc into that port, I am not able to ping anything past the port. DHCP does not work, cannot find the dmz, etc.

I don't see any gw's or routes configured.

Also, I know you said it's for testing but using vlan 1 isn't a best practice and I would recommend setting up other vlans with layer 3 interfaces. It makes things so much easier to organize and configure.

Vlan1 is up up. I have verified the connectivity in several ports in three different modules. Will plugging the fiber into the supervisor module as opposed to the gbic module make a difference? It is just frustrating that I can ping the switch from my desktop and ping everything on the network from the switch, but cannot log on to the domain.

On all user pc ports enter the "switchport host" command which turns off trunking and channeling and turns on portfast . This could be your dhcp problem .

Also as a previous poster indicated set your ports as switchports , believe by default they are routed ports .

Correct vipergg. Based on the config shown on Gi3/1 they are defaulting to routed interfaces. "switchport" as a command should be added, then 'swichport mode access'. SVI interface for vlan 1 would have been down because none of the ports were switchport, thus none were in vlan 1. Once you get that sorted, you can chichi that you can ping the SVI's IP from the host with static IP in same subnet, then turn to troubleshooting DHCP. You should have an ip helper address configured on the SVI if you intend to relay DHCP towards an external server, and you need "ip routing" global config command entered to do inter-vlan routing for that purpose.

I have made all the changed that you guys have suggested. Here is the latest issue. It appears that the switch port setting are going to work, but now the giga4/1 port that I have the user plugged in to will not bring the protocol up. I have verified hardware and cabling, it just will not open up. I have set switchport access to vlan1 (knowing this is not standard protocol, just for testing) I just cannot get this port to wake up. Any ideas?

Could be cabling - set the switchport to 100/full and see what happens.
