I have a 6509 with dual supervisor modules, a 16 port gbic switch, and 3 ethernet cards. I brought the switch online for test purposes and here is what I found. All ports I have turned on are up with protocols up. I can ping my dns, dhcp, and proxy server. Here's the problem, when I connect a workstation to the switch they do not pull an IP address. I cannot ping any of the servers from the workstation even if I statically IP the machine. I am losing my mind. Thanks,
Jim

He said the "protocol" was down, implying the link is in an up/down state, physical up with line protocol in down state. Is that correct?

Guys,
The switchport setting did resolve the issues. The problem I was having was with the laptop I was working with, it couldn't find the domain controller from anywhere. I appreciate all of the help. If I run into any further issues I will start a new thread. I really appreciate all of the insight,

Respectfully,
A green CCNA
