I have searched and searched before I posted this thread and found something similar but the post was closed so please bear with me as I am fairly new to the ip phone. I have setup many within "intranets" but never out of the network. I guess my questions are:
1. Does the 5610SW IP require anything special (VPN connection) or will it create its own VPN connection. Basically can I plug this in to a remote office's switch and have it communicate with the ipoffice.
2. What ports need to be forwarded as the particular office has everything blocked expect the most needed ports.
3. When asked for TFTP server and File server is the local ip (192.168.1.xxx) or will it be the public ip (24.129.xxx.xxx).
4. If port forwarding is required does everything forward to the ip500 or the computer hosting manager.
5. At class I was given the IPoffice_46xx_vpn which I am not sure will work with the 5610. I also lost the password to unlock the file.

Thanks for your help

You will need to purchase a VPN Phone license for the IP Office and upgrade/convert the phone to the VPN v2.3252 firmware before it can connect back to the host network. At that point all traffic will flow through the tunnel so your TFTP (FileSvr), CallSv and such will all be the internal IP addresses. The firmware and associated files are located on the IP Office admin CD under bin>VPN Phone>h323_VPN_232_52_SMBS folder.

Ok, here is the progress made. Originally I10d0192_3.bin was loading. I dropped the files from the admin cd 4.2.14 in to the working directory of the manager folder. I hooked the phone up intranet and it loaded bin I10d01a8_016 so it seems like I made some progress. I set the ip's as follows.

Phone 192.168.1.90 (same subnet as local)
File 192.168.1.5 (computer w/ manager)
Call Srv 192.168.1.4 (ip500 box)
Router 24.129.x.x Public ip address.

This didnt work so I tried the public ip address in different fields and neither worked. I do not have any port forwarding going, Is there ports that need to be forwarded to the ip500 or the computer running manager?

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

This will never work

You need a vpn connection or a vpn phone

@IPONEWBIE1; Do you have a licence, or are you using a VPN router on both side.

It works! Now if only I could remember what I did...

@IPONEWBIE1 you can not assign a public gateway to the Avaya IP phone. Also i10d0192_3.bin is the correct bootloader for the VPN phone firmware.

In this test situation I am trying it on my ip500 demo unit which I thought had a license for pretty much every feature. Tlpeter-correct me if im wrong but isn't the 5610SW-IP a VPN phone?
Kholladay- are you saying that the IP phone can not be used without a separate vpn connection? I was under the impression that with the correct firmware this would function as a vpn connection in itself.
Sorry to be going in circles but we didnt touch much on the IP phone (out of the network) in class.

The 5610SW is an IP phone. The VPN feature is a function of firmware. If the phone boots and says it has i10aVPN23252 firmware then it has been loaded with VPN firmware. If, on the other hand it boots and says it has i10d01a8016 then it is a regular IP phone and must be connected to the local LAN. You can load either firmware onto the phone.

So, if you have loaded the VPN firmware onto the phone you will still need an IPSEC VPN concentrator back at the main office. Most firewalls/routers have this feature built in anymore.

Ok, I got the VPN23252 firmware loaded and now it opens up a whole different situation. I didnt think a VPN concentrator was required but it sounds like it is. Is there one that is recomended from you guys (or girls)??? Right now we have the SSL312 by netgear but dont think it supports ipsec.

You definatley do need a VPN box system side, the handset encrypts the data in the tunnel you need something to decrypt it the other end. Avaya have a list of supported equipment on their website :)

you can set up the 5610 as a regular IP phone if you are doing a point-to-point vpn. this has been VERY easy to set up. we use the netgear FVS338 router at the main office and then netgear FVS114 routers at the smaller office/home. if its any bigger 2 people at the remote office, we just put the FVS338 at both ends. you could then treat this phone as an "internal/intranet" phone.

we have tried to run the VPNremote phone on a couple of IP sets without much luck. the netgear set up for this was different/weird? we got it to work, but if it lost power or reset, we had to manualy put in all the settings again. maybe i just set it up wrong? i do know that when it does work right, all you have to do is plug the phone into a network connection and it should connect the phone system and come up.

just a question for others....have you had any better luck with the VPNremote phone? if so, what did you use as far as the VPN router.

thanks and good luck!

I've done countless numbers of VPN Phones and each is a bit unique even when using the same concentrator, SonicWall 2040 for example. The benefit to VPN Phone over a site-to-site is that you can take the VPN Phone anywhere. I've packed mine up and taken it with me from the house to a hotel room to my mom's house in California.

As far as a concentrator is concerned I quite like the Adtran NetVanta 3400 series (3430 in particular). They work very well with the VPN Phone client and the setup is a walk in the park.

Has anyone had luck connecting directly to the FVS338 without having another FVS338 to connect through? Basically I wanted to know can I put the FVS338 at the company with the ipo and have the 5610's connect directly to a broadband connection i.e. in a hotel or at grandmas house (provided grandma doesnt still have dialup ha ha!)

Do you read the reactions well ?

You need:

1)

vpnrouter to vpnrouter

2)

vpnrouter to vpnphone

Or

3) Wait for release 5 and have a SIP softphone to an external IP address port forwarded to the IP Office.....just like me :)

Yes, I have read and re-read but what threw me off is the documentation on the FVS because it showed router-router. Sorry to inconvenience anyone.

amriddle01....

tell me how the SIP thing would work?

i would love to set one of those up. what would i need? i have not played with SIP at all.

As TheTaker says get the handset working first as R5 isn't freely available until late this year. But it is quite simple to do, you just need an IP endpoint licence and create a SIP extension (in the same way as an voip extn is created). Then you set your router to forward any traffic hitting your external IP address on the SIP ports (5060 to 5070 usually) to the IP adress of the IP office. Then when you launch the SIP softphone the router directs the traffic to the IP Office which checks the username and password and allows it to register. Simples :)
