Guys,

We have a customer with a CXi Controller with a faulty Hard Drive.

Software Assurance is INACTIVE and last time controller synched with AMC software version was 3300 Rel 7.0.

I managed to install version 7.0 on new hard drive but it seems that there is an issue with that version of software and the Layer 2 switch. So... questions are:

1. Can I install 9.0 and still download licenses? Remember SWAS is INACTIVE.
2. Can I install 7.1 and still download licenses?

Regards,

Daniel

Are you sure it's a CXi (part number 50005097) and not a CXi-II (part number 50006094)? The II may not be compatible with 7.0. And I believe 7.0 to 7.1 (or beyond) requires a new password so without SWA you're stuck at 7.0.

100% sure it is a CXi controller with an ATA Hard Drive.

Any idea where I can find another version of 7.0 that doesn't have problems with the L2 switch? The one on MOL has issues with the L2 switch.

Question? Can I go from 7.0 to 7.1? I'll have a look at the release notes.

Thanks a lot,

Daniel

You can't upgrade to 9 for sure

You probably can't go to 7.1

What version of 7.0 are you using?

The Layer 2 switch typically doesn't start working until the system is configured

which I know see is the one on MOL. What is the issue with the L2 switch?

To the original question you can only reload software of the same vintage with no SWA. So you can use any flavor of 7.0x. We are curious what the L2 issue is you are trying to work around?

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.

I have tried with 7.0.22 and 7.0.8.5 and the L2 switch does not work, it does not power phones and does not send packets throught it.

I have programmed an IP address for the switch and I can ping it, however phones never come up. I have also entered upgradebootrom all...

The console shows that:

MIPS not up, resetting L2 Switch subsystem...

As soon as I load any other version (7.1 or 9) the switch will work and no MIPS message on my Hyper terminal.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Daniel

The MIPS processor can be accessed by connecting a Secure Telnet or puTTY (RAW mode) session to the RTC IP, port 2004. When you connect there, what do you see? If the MIPS processor is normal, you should get a "#" prompt. I had some issues with the MIPS processors on a batch of MXE's, but I haven't heard of any issues with the CXi's.

This is what I see when connecting to port 2004:

*** Autoboot: Trying device 'eth1' file 10.0.120.10:vmlinuz (eth1,tftp)

Loader:elf Filesys:tftp Dev:eth1 File:10.0.120.10:vmlinuz Options:(null)
Loading: PANIC: out of memory!
Failed.

Please note that this controller has 512 of memory, not 256 as it originally came with.

Regards,

Daniel

Right, but remember you're looking at the MIPS processor, not the RTC. So it's just the MIPS subsystem that's spitting out the memory errors. What happens after you issue "MipsReset" (not sure about the case there) from the RTC shell console? It's entirely possible the MIPS just needs a kick in the pants to get itself right.

I have not seen an issue reported about this with release 7.... I assume you have tried loading 7 and doing a couple of reboots just to make sure? Wasn't there another thread on here recently with the same problem? The layer 2 only comes up after a reboot in this level of software.(sorry if it sounds like teaching granny to suck eggs).

You kept saying 512 and it didn't click

512 wasn't necessary until rel 10 MCD4.0

Must map the memory to different addresses and therefore need the updated software to see it maybe?

Right 512 is neede for MCD 4. Didn't even think that the lower R7 software would have problems addressing that new RAM module.

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.
