Hello,

First of all, any help is appreciated.

Second, another user had this exact same problem back in February of 2000; there was one reply, but it does not help me.

Bottom line: I have a 2501 with 16MB RAM, 4MB of flash. When I start up the router, I get the following:

- Right here is where it hangs. . .I have tried the following to fix this:
1.) Replaced the Boot PROMs (they were version 9)
2.) Swapped flash
3.) Tried the break sequence. When I do a break, I get this:
Abort at 0x10A866A (PC)
>
- However, I can not type anything once I've "broken out". The keyboard is dead.

Has anyone ever come across this? I have not before, but others have had the same problem. This router was fine a couple of weeks ago. . .

Again, any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Lo

Have you tried to enter the ROM mode and change the reg to 0x2102 and or go through the ROM procedure. “Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all”

If the router keeps reloading, try changing the DRAM. 'Borrow' it from another router.

You say you've changed the flash. Have you tried a later version of IOS? It's quite possible for the IOS to be corrupt.

As for the keyboard freezing,

a. try your router on another PC just in case it's a COM port problem.

b. change the rollover cable

c. change the RJ45 to DB9 adapter

Let us know how it goes.

I think Kane99 is right, I would start with the DRAM. You say you have 16M when the router is saying you have 6M (4M simm and 2M onboard).

Hey Folks,

Thanks for your suggestions!

Unfortunately, I am still where I began. . .my last "hope" is to download a new IOS. . .

I swapped out the RAM, swapped console cable & DB-9 adapter, can "break" but still can not type anything.

I'm going to try and upgrade the IOS soon. . .

If you think of anything else, please post it.

Thanks,
Lo

Yeah, the problem might lie in that you are using the 3000 IOS, and a VERY old one at that. Hope it works out with the new IOS. By the way, where are you downloading the newer IOS image?

Well spotted Ocitillo and Rburke.

I'm ashamed of myself. Low1 DID say he has 16MB of RAM and yet his initial running-config shows 4MB + 2MB shared. I didn't look out for this. And he IS running 3000 software which is OLD.

His IOS version was

"Compiled Wed 28-Sep-94 13:39 by chansen"

1994 suggests a VERY OLD IOS version.

Also look at Cisco's address according to the IOS:

Thanks to all for their input. . .much appreciated. I am beginning to think this router is toast!

Here's the latest. . .

I swapped the FLASH from another 2501 I have; the other 2501 was running IOS 11.3.

The same problem still exists. . .hangs in the exact same spot. The router does reflect the "upgraded/swapped" flash, but still hangs. . .

Any other things to upgrade or swap?

Hey Folks,

Lo again. . .following up to a part I left out. Why in the world would this router now be doing Novell commands? Strange - I have not seen this before.

Any thoughts? I'm beginning to think this router is dead - I've tried different terminal programs and the same problem.

Should I bury it??? lol

To recap, I have:
- Swapped RAM and flash from another router
- Tried another Terminal Program
- Swapped console cable and DB-9 to RJ-45 connector
- Tried to ping the E0 and telnet to the router (neither worked).

Router shows:
- Solid green light next to AUX port
- Transceiver shows link, polarity, and power green lights - steady on
- Green light next to AUI flashes intermittently, indicating Keeps are going out (hub flashes intermittently as well)

Thanks again,
Lo

The reason that it would run "Novell" commands is because the routers have the ability to route Novell packets like IPX, or IP, just depending on how the Novell netowrk is setup. Have you tried booting into Boot mode? In other words passing up the IOS that is on the flash, and then booting to the hard-coded IOs that is built into the Boot chips.

"System Bootstrap, Version 11.0(10c)XB2, PLATFORM SPECIFIC RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)"

It show that your system has the newest Boot ROMS for hte 2500 series, so if you boot into Boot mode, then you should be running IOS 11.0, just not with all the bells and whistles. I think that if you could get into that, then you would be ok. Unfortunetly without keyboard it won't be possible. The only thing I could recommend would be to try plugging the console cable into the AUX port, and change your terminal settings to "Flow Control Hardware" (instead of the No Flow Control when you plug into the Console port) By the way, whenever you tried to connect to the Console port you did change your terminal program settings to No Flow Control, right? Just a thought, let us know what happens....

Hi Low1,

Have you solved this problem yet? If yes please share it with us. I recently run into similar situation and I'm looking for solutions.

Greetings,
I had a simular problem with an old 2502, and it about drove me nuts.
What I found out on why the router would go through a startup routine and give me the exec prompt and would not respond after that, was that I had a KVM switch between the computer that had hyper-term on it and the router.
It would see a break command, but that's it.
When I hooked a keyboard directly to the computer, it worked and I could make changes to the config and reload the changes.
Are you running a KVM switch too?
Just a thought to maybe help out a bit.
