1608 No File server

I know i have read here about some issues with 1608 phones coming up with no file server address before. I cant find the thread. Here is what we have. I have 1608 phones on an extreme switch with a bunch of VLANS. the phone boots up in the data VLAN and grabs option 242 L2Q-1,L2QVLAN=10 and then reboots comes up in the voice VLAN and gets option 242 again with MCIPADD=x.x.x.x,HTTPSRVR=x.x.x.x. the phone shows the files server address and then says no file server * to program. if we set the phone static it does the same thing. No matter what we do it shows no file server address. has anyone else run into this?

Does it work when you use the IPO as dhcp server in that VLAN ?

Unfortunately i cant try it right now. The extreme has helper addresses pointing to the data DHCP server and i cant get in and remove them.

Is that string complete or just a part of it ?

It needs to be:

MCIPADD=x.x.x.x,MCPORT=1719, HTTPSRVR=x.x.x.x

There is no MCPORT in it

I have tried it with and without the port number. i found a post on here that said it was not needed so i tried it and it did not help. i tried with HTTPSRVR, TFTPSRVR and also HTTPSSRVR in the string and all come back the same

Are you sure the routing is in place and correct for VLAN10 to reach the file server?

I am working on confirming that now. They are both in the same VLAN but are on different switches. My tech is gone so i will have to wait until monday to test.

just as a test and for laughs...

statically address the phone (IP addrs, call server etc) and set the router address to a non existent address on the same subnet. restart the phone and see if the router address persists.

I have seen it loosing the file server address too when it cannot find it.
That is why i ask for using the IPO as DHCP server.
If it finds the IPO then it will work.
When it cannot get any DHCP then it won't work (duuuhhhhhh)

I will try this stuff on monday and see what happens. I also have a 1616 shipping to site to see what happens with it. I had this problem at 1 other site and we had to replace the phones. we tried to statically set the phone and it wasnt working. I can ping the phone from the file server.

i have found (if possibly related) that when you set everything to DCHP but statically assign a file server on a VPN remote phone, it will always use the router's wan address as the file server address...

madness.

just an idea, do you have access to the file server? If yes try to ping the phone from it, maybe the routing is wrong and the phone just really can't reach the file server and stops then.
I know that the phones won't boot up properly if they can't first ping the default gateway even if all the other settings are correct.

i can ping the phone from the file server. so i can tell the routing is right that way. i can test the other way right now. will try monday..

Make sure the port where the DHCP (IPO or server) is only "untagged" in VLAN 10, and that there are no other VLAN's tagged.

Also in the "advanced dhcp setting" change/add the GW in that VLAN, this can be you IPO or routing switch.

I've seen this with a couple of installations.

Make sure (and double check yourself if the IT-guys say all is ok) that the Data DHCPServer is only in the Data-Vlan NOT in the voice vlan.
The DHCP-helper adress on the routing-switch will take care of the forwarding the right IPAdres (from the right scope) to the phone.

If your DHCP lanswitchport is also configured for the voice-vlan it will get two DCHP requests for the same phone. The phone gets 2 responses and gets confused that leads to unpredictable results.
