I had a similar problem with a PC Chips MOBO, I found that the problem was caused by a modem which the MOBO assumed was an onboard sound card, this only happened if I changed the media type. Some games would make it happen too.
I removed the modem (sold it as I started using BB)and the problem...
This may be a bit of a bum steer but I was told that the driver you seek is the 'Hitachi' GD-2000 driver.
The source is not reliable but I figure it is worth a go. It is free to download at Hitachi or driverguide.com.
CPU must compatible, I have had the system since 2002 and I replaced the MOBO with the same model.
I will try and get hold of another AMD CPU and try that.
Think it is going to be one of those mysterious problems that is going to cost some to fix. Thanks for the input.
Your hard drive may not be Hitachi but it is a good idea to run the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test (download from HGST.com). This will give you a good idea of what is wrong with the bad sectors and if it produces a RMA code then you know the hard drive is needing replacement.
