My home computer has the following:

Soyo SY-K7VTA Pro 1.0
Sound Blaster Live 5.1
AMD 1700
640+ Mbyte SDRAM
Windows XP Home 5.1.2600 SP2

My problem is that on start up, sound works great. After some period of time (hours) sound stops working and when I select the sound control panel it tells me that there are "no active mixer devices available". The hardware appears in the device manager and it is "functioning properly". When I select reboot or shutdown, I hear the windows shutdown sound just fine. Upon restart the sound will work for another short time (hours) and then quit working. I have on board sound disabled and installed sound blaster PCI card. (BTW this also occurred on the on board sound) Power management is turned off. Drivers are up to date and motherboard bios recently updated (same probmel before update). It appears that the sound is "sleeping" and the restart/shutdown is a wake up call...

purplexed.

I had a similar problem with a PC Chips MOBO, I found that the problem was caused by a modem which the MOBO assumed was an onboard sound card, this only happened if I changed the media type. Some games would make it happen too.

I removed the modem (sold it as I started using BB)and the problem went with it.

Probably no help to you, but it was the same fault.
