Could be your prognosis is correct .....
Twice in the last couple of weeks, this has happened:
Shut down at night - all ok
Used it this morning, then shut down - all ok
Switched on this evening ... it froze as the Desktop appeared.
After a few minutes, hit Reset on PC
It automatically...

I know it seems unlikely, but I googled and found some other cases where a PC was reluctant to start first time because of the BIOS.
Anyway, I shall bear in mind the possibility that there could still be a problem. I am looking out for minidumps.
As for data, I have Acronis True...

All those were possibilities but it seems that the unusual behaviour (like trying to start an old car) was down to the BIOS. I updated it, and now all is ok ......... so far
My PC has new motherboard, CPU, RAM, PSU, HD. It has worked perfectly for a few weeks since built.
Turned it on this evening and little sign of life.
The HD and CD lights come on
At no point does the cooler fan on the CPU turn
Nothing appears on the screen
The HD does not appear to be doing...
Thanks to rvnguy and Kestrel1 - I had already looked for a test utility but there was not one listed for my drive. However, when I found out which one to run the result was ..... I was asked to send the drive back to swap. My PC is now running from the backup drive instead ...... but it seems...
I have recently purchased 2 Samsung Spinpoint hard drives (HD160JJ for a newly built PC. The second disk is just for backups. The drive makes a low tick sound whenever the HD light comes on. It is apparently seeking something even if I am not asking it to do anything - probably about 0.8...

Thanks for the latest links - I shall have to look at them properly in a couple of days time.
However, the "impersonate" solution requires Local Security Policy - which is something I do not have with XP HOME, so I am stuck again.
One of your links led to getting the Security Tab in XP...
I have un-installed Far Cry. Result - No change.

I tried to install the BITS routine mentioned by Stu - It would not accept it as my version was newer .....
I have yet to try MS themselves. This seems to be not uncommon - but the solutions...
Thanks to both tf1 and linney for your efforts, but alas these do not solve the problem. I have XP HOME and therefore I simply do not have options 4, 5 or 6 which all the articles refer to:
1. Click Start.
2. Point to Programs.
3. Point to Administrative Tools.
4. Choose Local Security...
Until a month ago, the Windows automatic update worked fine. Now it fails with error 0x800A0046 - which seems to be a VBSCRIPT RUNTIME error.
The MS website offers a solution which only relates to XP PRO - unfortunately, I've got XP HOME.
As to why this has happened, I do not know, The only...

I was not expecting anyone to say that XP had to be on C: - especially as the machine I am currently working on has XP on D: and has been fine (there is some sort of Ghost on C: that came pre-installed).
I have only ever had a problem with programs...
I would like to install XP on a new machine. It will have one big hard disc of about 180 Gb. I would like to have just two partitions - C: for programs and data and
Z: XP
I want C: because it is easy to install programs which insist on C: etc
I want XP out of the way. So my question is -...
