Windows Update stopped working

Until a month ago, the Windows automatic update worked fine. Now it fails with error 0x800A0046 - which seems to be a VBSCRIPT RUNTIME error.

The MS website offers a solution which only relates to XP PRO - unfortunately, I've got XP HOME.

As to why this has happened, I do not know, The only change recently was to load Far Cry, and this worked fine in itself.

I always sign on as ADMIN to download - it would not run otherwise anyway. I tried creating a new user with ADMIN status, but the result was the same.
Any ideas as to how I get start getting updates again ?

Try as much of these as apply to Home.

You could try uninstalling "Far Cry" and see if that fixes the problem?

It wouldn't hurt to try this just in case.

Thanks to both tf1 and linney for your efforts, but alas these do not solve the problem. I have XP HOME and therefore I simply do not have options 4, 5 or 6 which all the articles refer to:

1. Click Start.
2. Point to Programs.
3. Point to Administrative Tools.
4. Choose Local Security Policy
5. Expand Local Policies
6. Choose User Rights Assignment

I have tried the rest of it ie at cmd line:
sc sdset wuauserv DA;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)
(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)
(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

although I get a pleasant "success" messsage, it does not actually achieve anything - the error is still the same.

Does anyone have any suggestions for XP HOME (apart from upgrade to XP PRO .....)?

What information is in your C:/Windows/WindowsUpdate.log and in your Event Viewer?

You could try uninstalling "Far Cry" and see if that fixes the problem?

It wouldn't hurt to try that just in case.


Microsoft offer a free no fee service for fixing Windows Update problems, have you tried them?

Try reinstalling BITS 2.0 /WinHTTP 5 (search Microsoft.com > downloads).
It may not be related, but it's fixed so many of my update problems before.

I have un-installed Far Cry. Result - No change.
I have re-installed Far Cry. Result - No change.

I tried to install the BITS routine mentioned by Stu - It would not accept it as my version was newer .....

I have yet to try MS themselves. This seems to be not uncommon - but the solutions relate more to XP Pro.

These are all good suggestions, but not necessarily the right one yet. Any more ideas ?

Windows XP, Windows 2000 SP3 and earlier, and Windows NT: This privilege is not supported.

I am not exactly what the above means? Maybe it is not part of XP Home??????????


Did you look at the SubInAcl article in that other thread?

There is also NtRights to consider if you want to try and set this privilege.

Thanks for the latest links - I shall have to look at them properly in a couple of days time.

However, the "impersonate" solution requires Local Security Policy - which is something I do not have with XP HOME, so I am stuck again.

One of your links led to getting the Security Tab in XP HOME which could be very useful (but not really related to this) - I will investigate later.

You asked about the Event Viewer - the attempts and failures to download do not create any information at all.
