Try assigning an IRQ the the VGA adapter in the machines BIOS. I seem to remeber that some mobo/NVidia VGA combinations needed this. The settings in the bios is normally just enable/dissable.

From ur 2nd post, you're already in the right track. Setting the drive as a slave and having the BIOS find it, but not windows suggests it needs partitioning.

I THINK I remember Ontrack making some recovery s/w that basically tracked changes to the info on the HDD. I have only had a few run-ins with it, but it was a pain when I did. I can't think of any good reason to keep/use it - there are MUCH better ways of keeping track of changes.
