Only one more question... I've read elswhere ...(http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm) that the info on /cmd... ipconfig/all ie the dns servers it reports there, are the ones that have to be input on the Tcp/Ip settings section...? As opposed to the router ip ie 192.168.2.1...

Hi... Problem solved... I needed to an update which did not appear through windows update!!!? It is a conflict for Laptops with built in web cams,preventing the system from shutting down. Fixed by KB909667. This will help future users. Phew!

Hi...have tried reinstalling sound card drivers. No clues in event viewer... I can't really tell if safe mode is better because it seems to be tempremental...it may shutdown a few times in a row and the all of a sudden the next time it just hangs?

Hi... I have performed a clean install of xp pro sp2 on my new Sony laptop..I have managed to solve all errors in device manager and all drivers have been loaded manually. (don't like the sony pre-installed rubbish)... but almost every time I restart or shutdown ...the system just hangs at...

Will remove the ide and try again...windows actually recognises the sata without the need for f6...? I was pleasently suprised. The Bios does have other settings which I have explored...ie on the sata option I can tell it to set as ide primary master/slave or secondary master/slave or sata 0...
