Hi...

Trying to determine what is up with my Daughter's p.c.

17" lcd monitor...only stays on for a couple of seconds...then goes to black screen?

If I turn the monitor off then on again it stays on for a couple of seconds then off again?

I have changed the graphics card...still done the same.
I then tested the monitor on my p.c and it is ok?

The only other thing it could be is surely the motherboard or power supply?
I don't have spaers of these so can not test.

How do I find out what it could be?

Thanks.

So when it "...only stays on for a couple of seconds...then goes to black screen...", does it actually display anything during that short time? POST screen, Windows logon, etc?

Does the PC "sound" as if it's booted up? Do you hear the floppy disk "grunt" when it goes through the sequence? What about front panel l.e.d.s - are they off, on, or what?

Could be that they display resolution that the pc is set toi is not compatable with the monitor ..... borrow another monitor (fried, relative, kind boss) and see if it does the same.

I second the display resolution. Does it go blank in safe mode also?

Hi...

Thanks for the reply's guys....

It was perfect to start with but has got worse and worse over the last 3 months.

Have tried lowering the refresh rate...no joy.

Have disabled all power saving.

Also have the latest bios installed.

It stays on for a couple of seconds while booting....then once xp has loaded/I turn off then on...it stays on for a couple of seconds again.
Just to clarify...xp loads fine.

I assumed it was her Monitor...but it worked on my p.c.

Now to rule out the psu and mobo and monitor...I will try it on another monitor.

She wont be able to bring the tower to me till the weekend....will keep you posted.

Thanks.

So if you go into the BIOS (Del key or whatever), does the display stay on ok? As it sounds from what you're saying that it maybe only "disappears" once XP is loaded to the desktop.

What about Safe Mode? Does that work?

it won't be a psu problem since the monitor would be powered from the wall socket...

unless you actually have a monitor that's powered from your pc, I've not seen any of those around for a LONG time...

if xp loads fine, and the screen only goes blank after xp has loaded, then it could be your os, however not sure why turning off the monitor and turning it back on again would make it work since just turning off the monitor doesn't actually affect the os at all.

1) As mentioned, try going into your BIOS, and see if the monitor stays on during that time, without shutting off.
o If it still shuts off, then you've got a bad monitor, and the monitor is going into "power save" mode, because it is not sensing the input voltage.
2) If it stays on, then try booting windows in Safe mode. This will default to 640x480x256/60hz. If the monitor stays on then, you know it's a resolution/refresh rate issue; start by setting your computer's resolution to 640x480x256 at 60hz, and increase from there until it "goes out" again.

3) If you still have issues, try a different monitor (preferably energy star compliant) on her PC; if *THAT* one goes out, then the PC is not giving the correct signal to the monitor for it to stay on. Time for a new video card.

Hi...

Thanks for the input guys...
I did not try safe mode or bios....
I will try what you suggest on the weekend when she brings the p.c to me.

I did already try anther graphics card but it did the same thing.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks.
