Hi...

I have performed a clean install of xp pro sp2 on my new Sony laptop..I have managed to solve all errors in device manager and all drivers have been loaded manually.

(don't like the sony pre-installed rubbish)...

but almost every time I restart or shutdown ...the system just hangs at "windows is shutting down".

Could someone please help me and solve this.

Thanks.

may be a corrupt sound file....try reinstalling your sound card driver. That may clean it up.

Hi...have tried reinstalling sound card drivers.
No clues in event viewer...
I can't really tell if safe mode is better because it seems to be tempremental...it may shutdown a few times in a row and the all of a sudden the next time it just hangs?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

Corruption in the registry may be causing your hang at Shutdown. Maybe you are missing something from Sony that you excluded in your clean install and is necessary for a proper shutdown?

Was this an OEM install originally and have you replaced it with a retail version of XP, laptops may need special drivers not usually found on a retail CD.

Hi

there are no errors on the drive...it was an oem install originally but I have installed all drivers from the sony recovery disc manually....?

Hi...

Problem solved...

I needed to an update which did not appear through windows update!!!?

It is a conflict for Laptops with built in web cams, preventing the system from shutting down.

Fixed by KB909667.

This will help future users.

Phew!
