What is the operating system?
Have you tried new tapes? Retensioning tapes?
What software are you using? What drivers are installed?
What is the SCSI Controller and SCSI ID this is set to?
Sony also makes a Tape Utility that will test your drive...
There is only one firmware upgrade for the SDT-9000 provided by Sony. The last two letters of the model number are for marketing purposes only. (IE the SDT-9000/BM is bundled with a Bezel and a Manual) Here is the webpage link for the firmware upgrade for the SDT-9000...
Did you make sure that the Veritas' drivers were installed for the tape drive? Did you try retensioning the tapes? This is not normally a software related issue and the software can usually be updated.
Here is Veritas' webpage pertaining to these errors...
Sony offers the drivers for the use with the operating systems native back up only. The only time you would use the Sony drivers is if you are using the Windows BackUp.
Here is the webpage to obtain the drivers:

For all other back up you would use the software...
This depends on the software that you are using as this operation is software prompted. If you are using Windows native back-up you would "prepare the tape" in RSM, like with Veritas Back up Exec you would also do this WITHIN the software.
