I have 8 Compaq Proliant ML350 servers with interal Compaq (Sony) AIT50 drives. About half the time I start a backup, I get an alert saying the tape has been ejected while reading/writing and the op has failed. However, the backup continues to %100 and appears to work fine. I've done a catalog and restore of individual random files w/out problems. Any ideas?

Did you find a solution to that? I am suffering from the same problem!

What is the operating system?
Have you tried new tapes? Retensioning tapes?
What software are you using? What drivers are installed?
What is the SCSI Controller and SCSI ID this is set to?

Sony also makes a Tape Utility that will test your drive:
