Actually I went from a VIA to an Intel chip set. Sence I want to get away from the HP entirely it may be easier to get a retail version of XP and do a clean install.
I had an HPXT983 that mobo went out on. The os, XP, is on a partition on the hard drive. I put a new ASUS P4P800vm and P4/Celeron and the other HP parts in a new box, When I start up I get to the select windows 'mode' screen, next screen is error message ""windows shut down.....etc...
My XT983 was randomly shutting down. Even when I was not using it at the time. After two weeks of trying every suggestion and lead. Turned out to be CPU was getting to hot. Blew all the dust out and it cleared up.

My mobo died in my xt983 running xp home, I have moved the HD,[sv400] to my other pc running 98se,and set it as slave. The sys didn't detect and install it as a new device but it recognizes it in device manager. How can I install or access data on it? It has no drive letter assigned.

I tried removing, unplugging everything in the case, nothing changed.
I think I will go with a new mobo and see what happens,

Thanks for the reply. This PC, xt983, is no longer supported by HP and I don't think it is worth investing very much into, especially if it is trial and error. Everything is built into the board and finding parts will be difficult even if you can identify them. And sending it off would cost...
