Hi krakatoa
Are you using the same crossover cable that worked before? In not, are you sure the cable you are using is a crossover? Can you ping the xp pc from the 98 pc and vice versa?
To be clear- you can't see the WIN98 pc from the XP pc nor can you see the XP pc from the WIN98 pc?
IF so, check the following: (apologies if you already have)
You do have the 'workgroup' name on both computers set to the same name, right? i.e. MSHOME
You have 'File and Printer SHaring'...

fyi - you don't have a domain created right now - you won't need one so the 'net use' isn't applicable. Can't have a domain unless you have a MS Server product installed like Win2k or NT.
I'm assuming you're getting the msg on the non-XP pc but pls verify and can you post the exact error msg you're getting?
Can you see the shared drive from the other machine? Is your logon id in a group with administrative rights(XP only)?
In XP, if you right-click on the My Computer icon and...
I'd probably start by checking 'sound' properties in control panel. In the 'audio' tab of the 'playback' device, click the 'advanced' button(I'm on XP right now, 2000 should look about the same) make sure it's set to stereo speakers of some sort, not mono.

I had same issue a while back on one of my machines. I always run Nero too. Tried turning off the Nero checker and still had problem.
There was some file left somewhere that made pc think it needed to burn a cd. Like it had tried to burn previously and got interrupted.
Problem is I can't...
Well, I guessed right - those were the addresses I tried too but no luck, even after reset. Got a Netgear router that works but wanted to try the Addtron for a backup. I tried to use Telnet in a command prompt window which works with a Cayman router I have but that didn't work either. The...
Well, unfortunately WinME is notorious for problems. This may be beyond your scope, but I'd flush, format and install WinXP, preferably Pro.
Aside from that, go to the 'start' button, type in Msconfig and click Run button. Then take a look at the Startup tab and see what programs are...
I agree with fuller772. Cd drives always run alot slower than hard drives. Also, you're definitely right to be concerned about the heat issue. Just spend a few bucks and get a 24" cable. There are some vendors online that have the round cables for a few dollars but flat 24" is ok too...
This is long but maybe some ideas for you. I would definitely make usernames, etc unique. Verify that your network cards in both machines are compatible as far as speed, i.e. both 10mps or 100 or 10/100. If yo haven't already, doublecheck cables and connections.
Also, Win2k sometimes has a...
