With respect to upgrading, it would depend on what kind of processor you have on your current motherboard; if you plan to replace the motherboard as well, you should look seriously at replacing the entire machine rather than upgrading.
As for a new machine, AMD currently provides more 'bang for...
"Gee, maybe the answer is decaf, huh? Look at all the typos above!"
FWIW, there were only two typos in his entire message; the first being a word left out - "have allowed them download ONE copy", missing the word 'to', the second where he had the word 'out' where he meant...
Bear in mind that the restore disk will eliminate your partitions; it returns your disk to the smae condition as when it shipped, with 1 partition on the disk.
You'll have to use PartitionMagic (version 7) or som similar tool.

Your cheapest AND solution is as suggested above: back up to a second hard drive with Drive Image (or Ghost, or other similar software), with one addition: make it removeable. As an example, DirtCheapDrives has a kit (Dataport IV) for $45, although I've heard of others for less. There simply...
Oops. Just realized you asked specifically for a Slot-1 MB. In that case, I would recommend the P3V4X, or its successor, I beleive called the CUV4X.

I agree with Tels, and specifically recommend the CUSL2; it's only drawbacks are that it won't support the P4, and it is limited to 512MB of RAM.

Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere may be happy.
You can use fdisk to remove all partitions on the HD. This will allow you to use the entire 13GB in any fashion you choose. I don't understand what you mean when you say 'fdisk doesn't help'.
If you need more information, just ask.

The BIOS has basic default information that is used for this kind of setting, because as Windows is being loaded, it is not yet in place; it hasn't identified the graphics capabilities of whatever card may be available, nor is it able to poll any user options.

Anyone can make a typo; his intent was clear, I think.

As far as I can tell, no, there is really no way to do that. Unless you have an EPROM BIOS and can reprogram it...

Work: It isn't just for sleeping anymore.
When I boot, my bios displays a little table (not for long, though) that shows my ATA100 drive as UDMA 5, my ATA66 drive as UDMA 4, and my DVD and CDRW drives as UDMA 1 and 2 (not sure which is which). This is without going in to anything separately, mind you, just every boot.

You're in luck! You can order a complete P4 or Athlon system from a new company that's just opened up, 3mileisland.com! ALL their stuff glows, including the technicians!

U4me, my system is very similar - I have an additional 128MB RAM, my SB Live! is a 'Value', and my drives are on the native IDE controller. I don't have any freezing problems; I have IE6 installed for my wife. She uses it ocassionally. I can't be of any more help, except to say that it can be...
That probably would help; the objective is to get as much contact between the CPU and the heatsink as possible.
If you run your system with the cover off, you can see to verify that both the fans on your heatsink are running. One thing the overclockers do is to use a sandpaper or a dremel tool...
The best utility for this job is Partition Magic, but I realize you said you didn't want to spend the money for a one-time thing.
Don't have any better advice; sorry.

I have plenty of talent and vision. I just don't care.
Schu, while the 57 C reading may be false, it may not be. Read the comparison on Tom's (referenced above) about CPU heat; it seems that the AMD chips generate a lot of heat, quickly. This is not an indictment of AMD - if I were buying a new system today, I might very well purchase one myself...
I think that heat may very well be your problem; check with Intel's pages on the recommended range of operation. My PIII-1Ghz CPU runs at 34 deg. centigrade (93 deg. fahrenheit) at idle and up to 43 deg. C (109 deg. F) at full load (playing graphics-intensive games). My motherboard stays at a...
Do some research on heatsinks, and select the one that you think will do the job best for you. I suggest some of the interesting reading on Tom's (www.tomshardware.com). One thing shown there was a comparison of two Intel chips and two AMD chips run without heatsinks. Not that anyone would do...
The chipset designation (i845, i850, Via266etc.) refers to the controller chips that manage information on the motherboard - the flow of data across the bus. The socket designation (socket370, socket423, etc.) is a designation of the footprint of the processor - the number usually includes how...
I must confess that I have not heard of any kind of thermal pad to hold the heatsink itself on the processor.
If this is indeed the gist of the question, please disregard my earlier comments.
The cooler I now use (a ThermoEngine) is the one I was referring to; it has a heat-activated pad that...
