ok i was just wondering, i had a heatsink that came with a thermal pad on it, and i was wondering...what would give it more cooling?...if i left the thermal pad on and put arctic silver 2 on it...or should i scrape off the thermal pad then apply the arctic silver 2? any suggs.? thanks =)

Take off the thermal pad before applying Arctic Silver. The Arctic Silver will do an AMAZING job, I use it for all my systems. Be careful not to use too much, though. More, in this case, is not better. Good luck.

would it be bad if i left the thermal pad on? because my heatsink on my geforce would ne slippery and loose with arctic silver but without the pad. what should i do?

Historically, thermal pads have not done as good a job of filling in the gaps (between the processor and heat sink) as thermal paste; lately, they have gotten better. I read a review of a cooler in which the reviewer fully expected better cooling with paste, and got the exact same cooling instead. It's your preference.

If the cooling is sufficient, I would leave the pad on (without the paste).

Me thinks everybody is missing the point with this thread, Chandler 44 is talking about adhesive thermal pads, like double sided tape that holds the heatsink in place.
Normal Artic Silver won't hold the heatsink on!
I have heard of a thermal compound adhesive (epoxy thermal resin) that literally glues your heatsink in place. Kind of think Artic Silver make it?? not sure, one thing is though I remember it being expensive!!!
And No!! applying AS to the exsisting thermal adhesive pad will render it non adhesive, back to square one again!!
only other thing would be to fit the plastic retaining clips like the kind some chipset heatsinks use, but this may involve drilling holes in the PSB, rather U than ME!

ok wait...but for overclocking geforces...wouldnt it be better to put Arctic silver on the gpu instead of themal adhesive pads?

I must confess that I have not heard of any kind of thermal pad to hold the heatsink itself on the processor.

If this is indeed the gist of the question, please disregard my earlier comments.

The cooler I now use (a ThermoEngine) is the one I was referring to; it has a heat-activated pad that sits on the cooler where it contacts the CPU. It works as well as Arctic Silver according to tests. My CPU temp is a steady 34 degrees centigrade, going up when I play graphics-intensive games (Diablo II, for example) but only into the low 40's.

Every cooler I have used has attached to the CPU via clips, either plastic or metal.

Yes I suppose Artic Silver would be better thermally than the adhesive pads on GPU's but how U going to hold the heatsink on??
Thermal resin is the answer!! just gotta find someone who sells it!! EMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!! i will go look now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Martin.
PS watch this space?

You can still use Arctic Silver. Don't use the thermal pad. Instead, use Arctic Silver ADHESIVE. It will do a better job than a thermal pad. It will NOT slip off the card, you wouldn't be able to pry it off without a jackhammer.
