I would discourage the use of telnet for this purpose, telnet traffic is sent in clear text. The prefered method is SSH.

Have you tried to enable logging and viewing logged messages? Syslog would also fit the bill, setup a syslog server. I think Kiwi has a free one.

I've also used "non-Cisco brand name" memory before and have never had a issue with it. I think I have even RMA'd a router before with non brand memory and didn't have a issue, but of course your mileage may vary.

Hi,
If you have had a T1 down for just 1 day I would say you are fortunate. I have had T's down for more than a day before. I can't really give you to much advice on Lucent equipment, I would recommend switching over to all Cisco equipment if money is no issue.

You have 3 options.
1- Check and see if your current IOS version has a security advisory. Cisco will offer you a free upgrade. I don't know what version that they will give you but it is worth a look.
2- Check EBay. I believe you can find a legal version there.
3- Puchase from...

Cisco's website is a great resource but can be tough to navigate through the 11 million webpages.
Forums are a great source of information in my opinion.
