go to the control panel on the laptop and add a new profile that mirrors the profile on the pc (same username and password). this will give the pc access to the laptop, thus, show it on the network.

sounds like it could be a blaster worm issue. i would start with running the patch provided by microsoft. could also be bad RAM.

before going through the hassle of uninstalling/reinstalling, run a detect and repair. it's found in the help menu.
