the three best dvd burners are the plextor 708a, tdk 440n and the sony 510a - the plextor is around $200 with the tdk and the sony around $145-160. they are the fastest and come with the best software bundles. the plextor is an 8x dvd-r and will do that on some 4x media.

do you have or can you get the drivers for the mobo of the laptop? they need to be reinstalled and the best thing to do is to get to the mfgr's web site, download the latest version of the mobo's drivers and install them-should get all mobo functions back to normal.

grez is on the right track-hd works in another pc but not recognized in first one means that there are bent pins on the motherboard ide socket or the motherboard's ide controller is dead. bottom line-probably will need a new motherboard.

it looks like the system is searching for a scsi drive, not an ide drive. did you ever have a scsi drive installed - hdd or optical? look in device manager for a scsi device and remove it - it might solve the problem.
if you are using that many printers at the same time, you should set up a print server or limit the number of printers allowed to no more than 20 at a time. you are overloading the print spooler and forcing the system to allocate all its resources to the print spooler.

run a diagnostic software on the hd - even tho it is new the errors you are getting could be caused by bad sectors on the hd. maxtor has a good set of diagnostic tools that you can download from their web site
thanks for the tips - decided just to bite the bullet and reformat her pc, do a fresh install and image it. have posted this on several different forums and nobody seems to have a real solution but the tips i got here were among the best.
