Even if you do use another computer to boot your primary HD, and even if your computer attempts to install new drivers because it detects new hardware, it's quite simple to get around it....you can remove any known hardware to minimize the OS detecting new drivers...or it if it does try to...
my next suggestion would be to remove the HD and try booting it up with another motherboard, namely another computer. if you can boot the HD using another computer, then fix whatever is needed (probably using Norton WinDoctor & WinDisk). It should fix the registry problem and then you can use...
Fdisk is the best bet and make sure you know what format you want your HD in...FAT16 (as some Win98 Boot Disks will format it in), or FAT32 (as mine does) or the OS like (WinXP..which will want NTFS unless previously formatted in FAT32).

You could try loading in Safe Mode and run Norton WinDoctor if you have it, or check or drivers....as previously suggested.

the more difficult way would be to access an inf file or Office system file, but you may need a special program for that or it may accept a hex editor. as to the exact whereabout, i don't know. i suggest simply reinstalling Office XP because it doesn't take that long to reinstall. Simply back up...
if you're getting a loud noise, it could be due to your power supply going bust, in which case, your fan will go and then if you don't either replace your fans, power supplies, etc.., your mother board will be fried. best suggestion would be to backup your files and get yourself a new power...
