IBM Laptop I series Keeps rebooting itself
This may not be the case for you, but it might help. I ran across a computer that was rebooting itself. Come to find out, the capacitors on the MB was leaking. I know you have a laptop but you might want to check into it.- OneMillionExabytes

Toshiba HD Sounds
I also have a Sat Pro. Mine makes the same noise probably twice a month. However, after about 5 seconds it quits and it seems it only happens when I come out of standby.- OneMillionExabytes

Is this a BIOS and large hard disk issue?
The older M.B. should recognize at least 2 gb of the drive. Did you try a different cable or even a different controller?- OneMillionExabytes

If you update your bios, be very careful. If your system stops (freezes) during upgrade, this is very bad. I would go to the extreme of putting it on UPS before upgrading. If you mess it up, you looking at buying a new MotherBoard. [pipe]- OneMillionExabytes
