I'm trying to get the Enterprise SMTP to send to my Notes SMTP mail gateway.
The Notes server log shows that the Enterprise server is connecting but I get no messages sent.
In the CMC, the report has failed with the error message
"address error. CrystalEnterprise.Smtp: (501)"

If you are using an IP address for your mail server then you get the error that you have described. The hot-fixes for 8.5 are supposed to fix it, but the only wat that we got it sorted was to upgrade the server to V9
