Are you running more than one job at a time? If so, you may be limited by the speed of the server, NIC, SCSI card, etc.
If you can't pull the data off of the server fast enough, the tape drive will pad the tape with empty space.
Do you have this problem if you run the jobs consecutively, as...
"expecting the s/w vendor to be able to ballpark your ideal speed(s) over the phone isn't realistic either."
In principle, I agree with you.
However, if I do a file-system backup (same servers, same network topology, same backup hardware, same backup software, same everything...
FYI, I just called CA to see what they felt "normal" speed was for a brick level backup. They feel that anything over 5MB/min (no, that's not a typo, he said five) is very good.
When I pointed out that 5MB/Min is only slightly faster than copying to a floppy disk, they suggested that...
What rate of throughput is average for a brick-level backup?
My file system backups get about 700MB-1200MB/Min. My Exchange 2000 Information Store backups get about 500MB/Min. My brick-level backups start out at about 150MB/Min and steadily drop to about 38MB/Min.
This seems slow to me...
I received this tip from CA Tech Support concerning the Backup Agent 9.0 for Exchange 2000: The first three characters of the user account used for the agent must be unique across the the domain.
They could not explain why this requirement existed.
My guess is that if they fully documented...
FYI, CA calls anything that is installed on the Arcserve backup server an "Option" and anything that is installed on the server being backed up an "Agent". For example, the OFA goes on the file server and the Disaster Recovery option goes on the Arcserve server.
Use the...
We have had similar issues. The Arcserve VLDB database is only good until it reaches about 8GB. After that, it corrupts if you look at it funny. Database corruption issues will cause job crashes, tape merge crashes, and other problems. Notice how whenever you call tech support (in India)...
You can use most CA products (including all ArcServe products) without registering for 30 days.
To (properly) backup Exchange, you will need to use the agent for Exchange. The Exchange agent takes some time to set up, but you can restore individual folders to mailboxes (but not individual...
Here's the real solution:
Look up QO36927 (Dated 5 APR 2003) on the CA support site.
It provides a new OFANT.SYS (Open File Agent) driver that works in both Windows 2000 and 2003 and fixes the "multiple users can't access files concurrently" issues that are so troublesome in both the...
