Hi all,

After having installed Backup Agent for Open files on my ARCserve 2000 AD server (win2k server) to fix open files backup problems (on a NetWare 6 server) I am now in the process of configuring it. Here's where things hit a snag. Just a couple of questions:
Does the BAOF need to be installed on the machine that is backed up (ie the NetWare 6 server) or only on the backup server (ie the Win2k Server) that accesses this server to backup the files?
What is the group/file config tab used for?
What is the best way to configure the agent? ie best practices?

I had a look on the ARCServe support website but as usual it only gave me very basic information.

Any help very, very much appreciated!

Additionally, when I try to install the BAOf on the Netware server (through the Console > File Servers list > select NetWare Server > install) it installs the NLM okay but when I go to the NetWare server and type "load OFA" it comes up with a "Failed to open IPX socket" error message. Our NetWare servers are now fully IP and I'd rather not bind IPX again. Any solutions?

You install the OFA (aka BAOF) on the machine being backed up. Out of the box on Windows machines, the agent runs well in 98% of environments WITHOUT any additional tweaking.

The group/file functionality is used when a specific SET OF FILES need to be locked and backed up as a group for recoverability purposes to prevent index corruption for example on an accounting package.

Hope that helps some. Not familiar enough to assist with the Novell stuff.

If you're not using IPX you're probably fine and it'll run ok without it. It uses IPX to backup SAP data, but since you are running pure IP (which is good by the way, IPX is very chatty and slows down the network) you'll get the error message, but as long as you setup the configs for the nwagent ok, all should be well with the baof.

FYI, CA calls anything that is installed on the Arcserve backup server an "Option" and anything that is installed on the server being backed up an "Agent". For example, the OFA goes on the file server and the Disaster Recovery option goes on the Arcserve server.

Use the group/file features when you have a database that uses multiple files that must be kept in sync with each other (backed up simultaneously). An example would be a DBF file and an associated IDX file, or MDB/LDB files.

You must run any Arcserve service packs on both the Arcserve Server AND the servers being backed up. Make sure that you install the latest patches for the agent(s) as well as Arcserve and install them in numerical order, since installation usually consists of just copying DLL's over existing files.
