Win XP may be assigning a drive letter to the USB drive that is already mapped to a network drive.
Try this if you already haven't:
Insert the USB drive
Right-click on My Computer and select Manage
Under Storage, you should see Disk Management, click on it
In the right bottom...
From Microsoft's Knowledge Base Article 832671:
Note After you install the update, you cannot remove it. To revert to an installation before the update was installed, you must remove Office XP, and then install it again from the original CD-ROM.
