Swap File/Virtual memory mgt+Win98SE shutdown freezes

That looks pretty good to me. Your settings make it so there isn't any memory paging at all until you run out of ram, which won't happen until you run windows for probably a week or two straight starting up multiple programs and games during that period. If you restart every couple days or shut...

Swap File/Virtual memory mgt+Win98SE shutdown freezes

Why should he use a swap file with 512mb of ram? You have enough ram to make the swap file unnecessary. The swap file is insanely slow compared to ram, and was meant as a substitute to ram in low memory systems. I'd suggest disabling it by putting ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1 in your system.ini...

I THINK I have it fixed now.. I did a system file check scan and it found setupx.dll corrupt. Now it's not doing the hourglass cpu drain thing. We'll see if it lasts. Now I just want to know how after a fresh install the dll was corrupted when i've done fresh installs with the same cd with no...

computer will only run in safe mode

That actually randomly happened to me on my other computer before. What I did was start it in safe mode after the freeze then shut down in safe mode... then I turned the power back on booted it up in normal mode. For some reason that worked every time :/

Well i'm on a fresh OS install so its not a virus or a corrupted file or the OS pointing to something that doesnt exist. I went ahead and checked anyway and it wasn't. My device manager does't have anything yellow or messed up either. I narrowed the problem down to explorer.exe (windows...

Hi all. This is a strange situation. I just reformatted and put Win98SE back on because my registry got totally deleted from a "registry cleaner" program. Before this happened, my Win98SE worked flawlessly. Now that it's back on, whenever I do anything on the computer like going into...

    VETMON9X Problem

It's probably still being told to look for that in your startup list. Go to start -> run. Type msconfig and hit enter. Go to the last tab to the right (startup) and uncheck the program.

System Monitor showing 50% or more cpu usage at idle

Hey thanks for the process viewer link, it could come in handy down the road. As far as my processes go though, only the bare windows components are running. It's not my memory usage that was jumping, its my processor usage. I've looked into it more now and I think its a bug in Win98SE (could be...

System Monitor showing 50% or more cpu usage at idle

Hi i'm using Windows 98SE. I just looked at my system monitor and its showing 50% or more cpu usage while idle. Only systray and explorer are running. Nothing but systray is in my msconfig startup list. I just reformatted so I can't have a virus. When I move my mouse around the cpu usage goes...

    Athlon XP 2600+ (333FSB) or P4 2.4ghz (533FSB)?

Good arguments both ways. Lets talk about another thing: heat. Gamers and people wanting performance using AMD chips usually have to buy a different HSF (heat sink + fan) than the one that comes with the chip. The reason: AMD chips run HOT! I've had 3 relatives tell me thier AMD chips burned up...

    Windows Protection Error

Change your OS. Win ME is extremely buggy.

System Slows down in the afternoon.

For golyg, the system restore "feature" in Win ME could be the culprit here. The reason why it slows down after several hours of work is because every time you open a file or application it saves a copy to the harddrive. After a while, the restore file will grow to several gigabytes...
