Wonder why Cognos is being so hush hush about it. Seems like they'd let their user base know where they're going as early as possible, unless they're trying to squeeze every last dime out of the 7.0 suite.
We just had a person return from training and the scuttlebutt there was also sometime...
Our shop is currently on Cognos 7.3MR2 for Impromptu, Impromptu Web Reports, Powerplay, Powerplay Enterprise Server, and Upfront.
Does anyone know of any plans by Cognos for an 8.X version of this series? Or is everything being shoehorned into a ReportNet type platform?
Thanks!
Thanks lex.
We think we've solved the problem by publishing the cube to Upfront as a .PPX report (an interactive report).
However, next question if anyone would like to chime in, is there a performance hit taken between publishing a CUBE to Upfront and having people interact with it vs...
We provide cube services and data for our division but as you know, often people can crosscut a cube's data and end up with very bizarre results if they don't know the underlying data.
With that in mind, we want to add a disclaimer to our cubes basically saying, "THIS REPORT NOT REVIEWED BY XYZ...
Pyash, if you have a copy of the Cognos Powerplay Enterprise Server Guide, look in "Chapter 5: Provide Drill Through Access". There is a topic titled: "Drill Through to Impromptu Web Reports".
It lists all the steps you need to enable drill through from PPES to IWR.
Good luck!
Hi Seweryng. I agree w/both you and DoubleD.
However, another part of the problem (especially in large organizations), lies in the nature of business intelligence tools and their increasing complexity, and increasingly standardized IT department practices.
Tools like Cognos Impromptu and...
Thanks all. I appreciate the help. We've basically exported the .LAE from one site and imported it into the other. The security part that flex13 mentioned does make sense.
But from a convenience aspect, it still does suck. Heh.
Later.
Thanks flex.
I'm going to repeat what I think you said (my problem, not yours, thanks!). Please confirm if I understood you right.
I have a namespace (let's say, named "bubba") in environment 1 that has a user class (let's say, named "sally"). Environment 1 is running an instance of SunOne...
Quick question. We have an existing cube that is secured on a DEVELOPMENT bed's directory server and want to move that cube over to a TEST bed's directory server, without having to rebuild the cube.
Both the development bed and the test bed have a SunOne LDAP server, and both have the exact...
Yeah, we did find that SunOne and Configuration Manager will run over Terminal Services. But only AFTER the initial install. We had to install everything directly on the server. After that, we can administer via TS.
Thanks for the clarification though. May help others!
OK, here's the skinny. We were hitting a two-part problem:
1) The file c:\winnt\system32\msvcrt.dll was preventing us from installing the SunOne directory server AND was generating errors during the apply phase in Configuration Manager. We were getting odd errors about upfdbsrv.exe and...
Well, we confirmed it wasn't Terminal Services. I travelled over to our server farm and tried the installs there with the exact same results. Thanks for the input there, really.
What I did discover was that (we're splitting IWR, PPES and the gateways among three servers) is that our test bed...
We're installing PPES 7V3 on a Win2K machine over MS Terminal Services (the physical servers are over an hour away from our location). The install goes great, until we try to apply the configuration in Configuration Manager, and the configuration fails to apply.
We've also encountered the same...
To quote CindyW: "For CRN, you need an app server, web server, authentication source....way more human resources to keep it running."
I couldn't agree more. CRN sucks up major resources to keep it running than a basic Impromptu solution. Unless you need an enterprise web solution, and I mean...
Yeah, we had the same problem with our sales rep. He really didn't know a thing about the capabilities of some of the software.
However, my experience has been that Cognos is usually very good about sending a "technical" sales helper along with the regular marketroid sales reps if you want...
We got quoted like 18K for one of their products. And I agree, way too pricey.
Maybe you could get someone in your company to look at the .MDL file Transformer produces and take pertinent stuff out into something like a Word document using a script?
Could help.
I'm having to run a unit test for an integrated PPES/IWR/UPFRONT installation and need a quick URL for a tester to hit, independent of UPFRONT to show IWR is actually serving up a report.
Anyone know of one? I know if you browse http://<servername>/cognos/cgi-bin/ppdsisapi.dll, that...
We have a couple of calculated columns in a normal Powerplay report (.PPR) that are dropping out after we save the report to .PPX format and published it to PPES.
We do link the .PPX to the remote cube on PPES and can open the report after publishing and manipulate it. But any calculated...
It would be a shame for them to drop either product (Impromptu or Powerplay). Neither requires the large expenditure in infrastructure that a ReportNet style software does, much less the ReportNet software itself. The ease of use and integration of the software is what brought Cognos to the...
